Something I’ve long wanted to exist is some sort of transparent, distributed storage sync. The idea would be that you get a device with e.g. 500 GB storage, but it’s actually backed by a 1TB drive. Your information is encrypted on your drive, but then “seeded” across the network of other people’s devices in chunks for backup. This could be basically a transparent NAS (like a smart TV box with a bunch of storage for your local network), or even your laptop.

@cassidy That is a very interesting idea. I previously noticed https://tahoe-lafs.org but I have not tried it (it had debian packages but no more).

@oseo @cassidy #peergo and #nncp also spring from memory. think peergo may be dead, though.

The other half of your storage is used to sync data from other users. Your data always “permanently” lives on your own storage, but if you had, say, a phone or other low-storage device, you could pull from any of your OWN online devices PLUS a distributed network of online devices. Think like how a torrent can be downloaded from multiple distributed seeders. There would be a ton of engineering work, but the end result would be this sort of communal cloud without centralized control.

Imagine if the world’s most profitable companies were interested in solving these sorts of hard problems—especially when they have networks of millions to billions of devices out in the world—instead of using their near-infinite resources to convince you into strapping multi-thousand-dollar dystopian goggles to your face.

Even doing this transparently on the local network would be a huge improvement to centralized cloud storage for a lot of use cases. I don’t want to set up my own Nextcloud instance, I want my devices to be smart about this out of the box and share their storage/data seamlessly.
