Microsoft is doing a lot to try to get people to "go green" and "save energy" as if they're not also the people forcing millions of people to discard their perfectly good PCs due to arbitrary requirements for Windows 11You can't "go green" while contributing heavily to e-waste my guys

@roxy I'm almost surprised that there is no opencore legacy patcher equivalent for windows, it would keep a lot of machines going longer

@nihilazo @roxy if you want Windows 11 really bad, it's just a few registry tweaks away, or you could burn an USB with Rufus which in turn can do the job for youdo that only on a computer with an SSD... 10 is already really slow on an HDD, just imagine 11, which is somehow even more demanding :blobcatsweats:

@roxy Sorry if I sound a bit conspiratorial, but I think it is a scheme to get everyone hardware (and a firmware configuration) that enables remote attestation and DRM, which in the end would provide vendor lock-in by forcing people to use windows.Remote attestation requires everyone to have it enabled so remote services can actually start using it and it becomes commonplace, once that happens you're denied from accessing what you need from any OS that isn't approved.

@roxy The important bit is that Microsoft isn't the one doing the enforcement in that case, it's hundreds of independent services. Your bank, games, streaming services, they would require you to use approved hardware that assures them you're running a locked down OS on which they can oppress you, otherwise no service. You can look at smartphones to see where this system leads.

@awooo @roxy *angrily shakes fist at Google's SafetyNet, now Play Integrity API*Because the McDonald's app is (was?) just too critical to function on bootloader unlocked devices. Any day that I can still use Google Wallet to tap-and-pay with my modified phone is another day of defiance against "we know better than you."

@xerz@fedi.xerz.one @nihilazo@chitter.xyz @roxy@tech.lgbt remembering how well really early windows 10 used to run even on old hardware (I used to run it on a computer that couldn't even handle windows 7)

@tromino @nihilazo @roxy ye, it inherited it right from Windows 8, which was honestly the best Windows tech-wise imho
