@fossheim My alt text is always "diversity is our misfortune."

Here’s your semi-regular reminder that your alt text should describe what’s in the image, based on the purpose of it. If you are sharing a screenshot of a funny post, write out the text from the image, not “screenshot from tumblr”. If you are sharing a histogram with the latest covid number, share the most important values or takeaways or a link to the data, not just “histogram with covid numbers”.Otherwise blind and low vision screen reader users still don’t get the same info.

Incredible how many images I’ve come across lately where the alt text is basically a more verbose version of “image” and that’s not how it works.

Also want to add that there are situations where “histogram with covid numbers” *might* be appropriate alt text (also simplified example), eg. if you have a list of image-links that take you to histograms with different data, “histogram with covid data”, “histogram with bird flu data” etc. could be acceptable. In that case the user is using the images as a way of browsing pages in a navigation and looking for a specific subject, not for actual data.

So when sharing an image, it’s worth thinking about:- Why you are posting the image- What you want people to take away from the image- If there’s text or data on the image that the reader needs to know about- Level of detail & tone of voice of the descriptions Most of the time you’ll find you’ll need more than just “meme” or “funny tumblr conversation” or “infographic” though.

Maybe this should have been a blog post, it’s only been 6 months since my last one :BlobCat_Giggle:

@fossheim There's also the opposite non-description, alt text that describes each individual blade of grass in a photo while completely failing to convey the point of the picture.
