@strypeyGreat if you can power your servers from PV panels on the roof - but if it come from the grid then it's as renewable as anybody's. Less than half in most countries. One can argue that if you turn on/off your power the change is met by extra/less fossil fuel generation no matter if you are on a green tariff or not. It's nearly all greenwashing by the suppliers. Ask not what 'green' power they buy but how much they build.Imho CPU power & code efficency is the way to go.

@stuart> if you turn on/off your power the change is met by extra/less fossil fuel generation no matter if you are on a green tariff or notI don't know much about the situation in the UK, but I'd be cautious about over-extrapolating from it. Some companies, in some countries (eg Aotearoa Iceland), only own renewable generation. So if you're paying them for your electricity supply, your money is only going to be used to maintain and expand renewable generation. That's not greenwashing.

@strypeyYes - I did say most. Iceland and Norway are different. But large industrial nations which account for a disproportionate amount of generation. They are almost all heavily dependent on fossil fuel generation.Getting upto 50% is still a long term target for them. The best thing we can do is to minimise our consumption so renewables can be more of the whole.Low power cpus cost more but are environmentally better both in power consumed and heat generated reducing a/c requirements.

@stuartAgain, you're missing the point by focusing on renewables as a proportion of a *country's* electricity generation. As I said...> some companies... only own renewable generation. So if you're paying them for your electricity supply, your money is only going to be used to maintain and expand renewable generation.

Insisting on green energy suppliers is 1 part of a larger divestment strategy.

@strypey Thought you could then include all servers located in Norway, as our energy production is 99% renewable.Went to check my facts... and OOOF!!!Yes, energy we use here is 99% renewable, BUT, because of purchasing of electricity without guarantees of origin - and sale of guarantees of origin to companies/countries with less green energy,https://www.nve.no/energy-supply/electricity-disclosure/our documented use of renewables/nuclear is only at 38%! In 2018 it was at 46%. Bad trend.#NorskTut #Miljøvern #Strøm

@MaryPot> [Norway's] energy we use is 99% renewable, BUT, because of purchasing of electricity without guarantees of origin - and sale of guarantees of origin to companies/countries with less green energy…our documented use of renewables/nuclear is only at 38%! This is why it's better to look at the proportions of renewable generation per supply company, rather than per country. See the thread where I discussed that with @stuart.
