@strypeyGreat if you can power your servers from PV panels on the roof - but if it come from the grid then it's as renewable as anybody's. Less than half in most countries. One can argue that if you turn on/off your power the change is met by extra/less fossil fuel generation no matter if you are on a green tariff or not. It's nearly all greenwashing by the suppliers. Ask not what 'green' power they buy but how much they build.Imho CPU power & code efficency is the way to go.

@stuxT'is nothing compared the need to deliver little Jean & Jeanette to school in a 50K polluting SUV to maintain their social status.

@gme True but Mastodon is more or less the only brand name recognisable outside the #Fediverse. Hence it is and will continue to be the main entry point to the Fediverse for new users.Keep it simple or they won't come. Especially as many find it confusing enough as it is. When they have got their feet under the table they can grow and migrate. It they don't come the Fediverse won't grow.

@gmeYes and it worked. A major problem with Linux (sorry Linux/GNU) is that you can't actually install it. Instead you are presented with a plethora of very odd distros names - each claiming a unique advantage - which in themselves are mainly meaningless to folks outside the Linux ecosphere.Of course this choice and diversity is a great technical strength but goes some way to keeping us in a realitively small niche on the desktop. Only Google with Chrome has made a dent in that.

@gmeYou missed my point. You don't download Linux like Windows. You do download a distro. Which distro? Probably the one with most name recognition - Ubuntu? Whereas Linux Mint may be the best choice for the beginner or Kubuntu for the aspiring SysAdmin. By definition most Linux users believe they are using the best distro so it's confusing and advice contradictory.Which is why, if you want the Fediverse to expand and diversify you probably have to try and make entry simple and logical.

@gmeCentralised services have an inbuilt advantage in promoting the product under a single name, port of entry and login. That's what joinmastodon is trying to overcome. It has the danger to create a de facto centralised ActivitPub ecosphere but that's maybe only a problem if it succeeds too well.I like dealing with the problems of success rather than digging dead horses out of ditches.

@JdeBP @ianb @ChrisWereWatched the Tory party political broadcast tonight. Laura Trott (I kid you not) recording of a speech given to an audience somewhere sometime. No eye contact to camera. References to some visuals that were out of sight and hence made no sense. Production cost zero and it showed. The Tories have always been able to outspend everyone else and attract the best advertising talent. No more it seems. No money, no talent, no vision.I'm an actual fan of the Labour campaign of not distracting people from viewing the imploding meltdown. What worries me is the Tories ceding the right to Reform leaving the centre-right vacuum to Labour leaving LD in the centre and a mere 2 or 3 Green MPs as an unviable new left.

@ChrisWere @JdeBP @ianbMaybe. But I'm not sure the LibDems DNA would permit a radical change. They got a little more left when they absorbed the Social Democrats gang of four but soon reverted to type after Charles resigned. Plus the age demographic compared to the younger Greens means the latter will always be more radical making them uncomfortable bedfellows. But the LibDems can organise on limited resources which means their seat/vote ration is so great. But who can anticipate how such a broad collection of Opposition parties from far right to perhaps not as quite far left will work without a real dominant member? I anticipate it will be a mess each vying to be the real opposition fighting each other rather than the government.

@realcaseyrollins @SemAntiKast @rolleActually it wasn't failing until the last government decided to fail it. That's partly why they are the last government. Until then both right and left governments did view it as a human right even if delivery was imperfect. I'm sorry your human rights comment makes me shudder. What that says about you and me I will leave others to judge.

@realcaseyrollins @Linza @rolle @SemAntiKastNHS corruption? Citation please. The major healthcare corruption here was the PPE scandal which was the last government (not NHS) giving millions to their mates to markup useless supplies from Asia.

@h4890 @ChrisMayLA6I agree. Musk's paricular personality is not unconnected with driving SpaceX to successfully innovate to give us that spectacular success of today. Just like that Thunderbird-like synchronised landing of the Falcon 9 rockets. It didn't happen by chance. Nothing like it in rocketry since Saturn V and the Shuttle decades ago. That type of personality is also notoriously unable to empathise. This has led Elon to a very dark place politically and being unable to seperate Twitter/X from his ego.He isn't the first or last to give the world great achievements at the cost of what he destroys or corrupts.

@WetHat @juergen_hubert @mastodonmigrationI see a contradiction. Following the commercial monetisation route as #BlueSky must will lead to a poorer user experience. But Twitter/X is different. It was on that route but no more since Elon. He is using Twitter/X to spread his worldview, not for profit. The proof is its capitalisation. No matter how bad the commercial route of others - Twitter/X is at a different sphere of disinformation, hate and blind prejudice than would make no sense to a purely commercial operator maximising profit.

@stuxMost Americans don't accept that court and its international laws apply to them. Indeed it may be unlawful in the USA to accept otherwise. Hence it may not be an argument that is effective if a US soldier is ordered to do something that is illegal in countries which accept the court's jurisdiction.

@Nonilex sSome might say that if his assertion was true then it would be poetic justice for people of colour who have had to endure appalling discrimination tion for centuries.Except as a white middle class male myself I am still privileged. The best that could be said is a little less. At least in the UK.But the rich's playbook is always to misdirect the rightous anger of the poor white to people of colour rather than the really priveleged. The rich.
