So I've been getting wind of these "#Immutable #Linux #Distros" lately.What does #fediverse #think about them?

@finlaydag33kATM I don't need them. Though I don't do a lot of hacking in my root folders since I strictly put my configs, themes in ~. But though it came a long way I think that flatpak isn't there yet and I get better functionality out of the normal repos sometimes. So, it's a split decision.

@lcruggeri Yes, I do like that is basically has "everything in its own space".I've been wanting that for ages now instead of hoping dependencies I have don't conflict.

@mmorschel Yea fair.I don't do that much hacking in my root folders but I do encounter issues with dependency conflicts pretty often for which this system can be very helpful.

@KorayKaratay True, with Linux-based OS'es (like PostmarketOS) slowly crawling along this might indeed be an interesting thing.

@finlaydag33k I would like to see a immutable mobile distro where u can link the root acsees to your desktop.

@KorayKaratay I'm afraid I did not understand. Can you explain what you mean "link the root access to your desktop"?

@finlaydag33k I'm thinking of something like this: Phone will bi immutable and root will be locked(execpt updates). But one device wil be able to have permisson to gain root access of that immutable distro(pre-defined during initilazation). So kinda master-slave relationship IOT devices. Just in case something goes wrong. Something along those lines, dunno could be reduntant too

@KorayKaratay I think it could be made with confirmation prompts as well.Say:- Enable "developer mode" before hand from the settings (like Ubuntu Touch has).- Hook up to desktop.- Allow regular access via prompt (phone must be unlocked ofc).- When root access is requested, confirm via another prompt. If a malicious person has the phone physically and can unlock the phone, they'd have free reign anyway.

@finlaydag33kUsing dies NixOS count? I don't realy know about the other distributions out there, but having a central point to config the whole system(s) is greate. Now I wont easyly forget what changes I made 2 years ago to and can, much easier than before, remove or adjust them.

@landel I think NixOS counts as immutable yes.

@fbievan I mean to a degree it's basically: Install something like Flatpak (just an example), make your root read-only and you basically have an immutable OS.Basically everything belonging to the OS itself (rather than the user) would be locked. You can't easily fix core library issues no but you don't use an immutable distro if that's your priority.

@finlaydag33k I mean I'd personally prefer something like docker in that case.

@fbievan The downside about Docker is that it requires a lot more setup per app (if you can even get it working to begin with)

@fbievan True, I do use Docker Compose for a lot of stuff as well, altho I never really managed to succeed running something like Firefox or Discord in it.
