@lauren The transparent attempt at weaponizing regulation to keep upcoming competition, and crucially open source alternatives, out of the field is getting zero challenges from the press and being parroted universally. It's outright painful to see this play out and not be able to effectively call out the obvious grift as it plays out.

@lauren I hope companies doing so-called AI manage to hang themselves, as lawyers and telephone helplines and others have well publicized failures.Dare I hope, demonstrating to the public that a facility for language is not the same as intelligence.We once thought (LONG ago) that arithmetic is hard, so if a computer can do it, it must be smart. Not so. Same with (then) massive then data storage. Then with playing chess.Impressive is not the same as intelligent.

@lauren I have been thinking how nice it would be if we could mount an appropriate governmental response to these open letters - that is, if AI is such a threat, the government should immediately dissolve all the signers' AI-related companies without recompense and ban the signers from working on AI ever again on penalty of lengthy jail sentences. After all, if their arguments were valid instead of hogwash, this is what the consequences for folks like Sam Altman should be.
