       Universe, the characterization in this film is just so...off. None of them feel like they have any depth or presence, even though these are characters they've played for literally decades at this. McCoy is a cantankerous parody. Spock is demure to the point of being simpering. And Kirk, of course, feels overinflated yet childishly petulant. The writing is just awful, and that's just the start.The effects are horrid due to the lack of getting ILM. Ship effects and other special effects are rough. The constant re-use of TNG sets and set pieces just serves to remind us we could be watching something better.

       Now, there are scenes in the film which are good. McCoy's flashback scene with Sybok is one of the best in the film. DeForrest's performance is great, and you really feel for him in the liminal space he's entered into during the "mind meld". The conclusion of it though, ruins the entire experience. Spock's experience could have been rife with subtly and nuance, but instead it comes off as a footnote. And Kirk, at least this petulant version, doesn't get one at all. A better written film would have explored this, we could have gotten a much longer, human exploration of the character. Instead, we get nothing, because Kirk is too busy being a childish concept of a badass.
