I try not think too much about the fact that while smartphones and Chromebooks (and various other computers and hi-tech devices) are generally recommended to be replaced after a handful of years since they no longer receive crucial updates, I was just now able to easily order a new, inexpensive electrical replacement part specifically for my exact model 1960s era dishwasher.

@lauren Just for the sake of the discussion: is that dishwasher very eco-friendly in terms of water / energy / soap consumption ?

@ericfreyss It's not as efficient as ultra-new ones but it's not at all bad relatively compared to my power/water consumption overall (and it doesn't have to run very frequently), and it cleans far better than many new ones since it's built like the proverbial horse (obviously, given how long it's been around, and this is the first failure since I've had it which is many years). I do wish phosphates were still in the detergents though, to avoid the problems that all dishwashers have now -- including the new ones.

@lauren I remember feeling positively surprised that my e-book reader still got - and apparently still gets - software updates years after I bought it, and then feeling bad about the fact that I have such low expectations that something like that can positively surprise me.

@lauren electromechanical (non silicon) appliances are very desirable and preferable. A modern improvement that makes them even better is the easy availability of high quality YouTube tutorial videos for almost any reasonably common make, model and repair task.

@mrcompletely There actually are some YT videos addressing this very old dishwasher.

@mrcompletely In fact, I found a YT video showing the part replacement for a MUCH later model of the dishwasher, but it appears the essential design and parts have changed very minimally over the decades, so this should be relatively straightforward. Might not fix the problem, but based on research it's a very good bet. Of course, the fact that I was able to get this part for ~$16 shipped instead of the "standard" $120+shipping turns this into a no brainer to try.

@lauren I wonder hiw long it will be before laser cutters and 3D printers are standard in every garage. Sears Parts Direct closed, I think. End of those stores was bad news.

@lauren All these internet devices should either be 1) updated or 2) have their internet connectivity be physically disabled when updates end.

@aka_quant_noir Cut all those old devices off from the Net and the world would crash, so to speak. They're everywhere, and often in crucial applications. No way out.

@pinkyfloyd @aka_quant_noir Point is if those devices weren't kept online, an enormous number of utility and other associated systems could not function. While efforts to upgrade are happening, it's a very slow process because typically the equipment is specialized and expensive, and often utilities (for example) operate on very tight budgets.

@pinkyfloyd @aka_quant_noir These vulnerabilities (and many more) are well known among security experts. SCADA vulnerabilities are pretty much at the top of the "hot" list of concerns.

@lauren @aka_quant_noir are you trying to sell me network monitoring servicesmy point is simply this: if it were possible to cheaply and easily infiltrate those systems in order to cause "world-crashing" havoc it would have been done by now.

@lauren it's a shame and a waste. I use old smartphones as ebook readers just to squeeze some utility out of them before they go into a landfill.

@RoboGorillaman They also can make reasonable IP cameras if they don't overheat and the batteries don't swell out of the cases.

@lauren The hose in my vacuum cleaner ripped, and it being a 2006 model, the manufacturer (Dyson) no longer makes replacement parts. I tried every parts store online, but nobody had one. So I've given up and bought a new vacuum cleaner, this time not from Dyson.I also made sure to get a corded vacuum cleaner, because I'm tired of $50 battery packs that need replacing every few years and end up in landfill.

@lauren I work in industrial automaton, where equipment is expected to be maintainable for decades. Refurbished and new-old-stock parts for 30 year old Programmable Logic Controllers are readily available from a thriving ecosystem of suppliers.I cringe when I see someone using desktop PCs or android tablets or other consumer hardware in industrial applications - they obviously haven't realized that their hardware will be impossible to replace or repair long before the equipment's end-of-life.

@PhilSalkie @lauren As long as the software can still run on future hardware systems, it's okay.(This is a fairly standard situation for my company's products.)

@juergen_hubert @lauren I'm currently going through a year-long process of upgrading Win XP Labview systems to Win 10. There's only one LV version (2015) that supports the old hardware and also runs on Win 10. We could update hardware, but that requires re-validation of the entire process. We can't use the customer's desired computer brand because they no longer have PCI slots, so we had to have custom PCs built.
