The case of the Arab Spring is very instructional on this because it was actually studied. Major take-aways are thus:1. Social media companies and the west had a propagandistic interest in the narrative that Facebook and Twitter was assisting "democratic change".2. There is no real association between internet access/cell phone use and social unrest. 3. Banning internet access did not reduce unrest, and seemed to do the opposite. 4. Social media was however weaponized against dissidents and used to amplify their opponents. Overall, the social media environment is essentially hostile enemy territory full of landmines, tanks, machine gun nests, and double-agents.

@McNabb And they use that hostile environment to make it impossible to have a productive conversation, dehumanizing both sides.

@McNabb Depending on enemy infrastructure to wage war is strategically inept, which is why I have the same objection to going the legal route, if they see you coming they just change the rules. The figure of the sovereign becomes the exception to the rule who has the authority to enforce the rule, therefore the "sovereign is he who decides on the exception" .We need sovereignty over our own tools, infrastructure and people. It also might be interesting to examine how we fucked up online when we did have free reign and if it is useful going forward then, for what.
