@lauren @himay The misinformation in political ads is bad enough. But the way ads are targeted is the real problem, imho. Maria Ressaâs book from last year is a powerful exposĂ© about the evils of political misinformation in social media.

@Hippasus500 @himay Let's not go down this road again today like we did yesterday. You know how I feel about this. Ad targeting complaints are mostly hyped by haters who really just want everything for free, and largely don't even understand how targeting works. While -- as we discussed yesterday -- data brokers with the REAL personal information buy and sell it freely. You have it backwards. Misinformation/disinformation is enormously harmful and study after study shows how. There is virtually no *actual* harm shown that I've seen from ad targeting. It's virtually all emotional hype. Hate to keep using the word "hype" -- but it's the correct word.

@Hippasus500 @himay Note that most political ad targeting has nothing to do with the Internet, and is based on where you live and your voting registration and other data pulled from data brokers commercially -- NOT from Web services per se.

To be clear, I think Googleâs history with ad targeting is far more complicated than most realize, and you are certainly right there are worse actors than Google.Have you read âHow To Stand Up To A Dictatorâ (Ressaâs book)? If not, please do. It is very thought provoking, and a brutal indictment of Facebook.

@Hippasus500 @himay Facebook has been evil since day one. You can track it back to the origin stories. Google was founded to make the world's information widely available and useful. Facebook was founded to help guys avoid dating "ugly" women.

@himay @lauren While Iâm adding to your reading list, Zuboffâs book, âThe Age of Surveillance Capitalismâ is a foundational book.Itâs a slog. Youâll find much of it infuriating, no doubt. She desperately needed a more competent, aggressive editor, and technical consultants with a deeper understanding of Internet technology she lacks. But the book is carefully researched. How Google found itself in the advertising business is worth careful study.
