@lauren I agree about the sophistication of the vast majority of email users.As for the practicality…I remember a discussion about how easy it would be to develop some system. It was just a “small matter of software.”

@lauren @himay The misinformation in political ads is bad enough. But the way ads are targeted is the real problem, imho. Maria Ressa’s book from last year is a powerful exposé about the evils of political misinformation in social media.

To be clear, I think Google’s history with ad targeting is far more complicated than most realize, and you are certainly right there are worse actors than Google.Have you read “How To Stand Up To A Dictator” (Ressa’s book)? If not, please do. It is very thought provoking, and a brutal indictment of Facebook.

@himay @lauren While I’m adding to your reading list, Zuboff’s book, “The Age of Surveillance Capitalism” is a foundational book.It’s a slog. You’ll find much of it infuriating, no doubt. She desperately needed a more competent, aggressive editor, and technical consultants with a deeper understanding of Internet technology she lacks. But the book is carefully researched. How Google found itself in the advertising business is worth careful study.

You are quite right that reflexive schizmogenesis is the problem. I remember how Dan Ackroyd and Jane Curtis satirized the idea years ago on SNL.“Schizmogenesis” is just a fancy word for discrimination. The only reason it’s not a dirty word is hardly anyone outside of anthropology knows what it means. <wink>
