@dcc If you want to talk to people, sure there's mumble, but why would you want to do that?You can do voice chat over irc as well - both sides just need to setup certain software.

@dookie You can make infinity IRC channels, and segregate them into groups with channel title tags. Hexchat is one of the better graphical crossplatform clients. What aspects of the Discord layout is so useful? Something about moderation? Message replies?Two of IRC's main weaknesses are scrollback and searchability, and they're closely related. Various fixes have been attempted, but it's hard to be sure everything is being searched without a master repository being syncronized... and at that point you might as well just have public logs like these:http://btcbase.org/log/https://archive.logbot.info/Discord solves scrollback barely acceptably, but at least is fully searchable, sure.

@dookie Is Android or iOS optimization a dealbreaker?I agree, all IRC clients I've seen are ugly. I personally think AngularJS would make for a good interface, but I can't afford to do more than a barebones version if I make one at all.RE calls and such... I think OAuth would help with things like this. There's an identity issue, but... OAuth IRC logins, and OAuth added to murmur, means that people could run 'fedi' servers and authenticate on other peoples' IRC and Mumble using their own OAuth fedi server. As long as they're federated...So much is possible and just out of reach at present.
