Forgive my ignorance, but what's behind the name of the #ActuallyAutistic hashtag? Like, why "actually" autistic? As opposed to what? Just wondering ^^

@iro_miya@mk.absturztau.be a lot of neurotypical parents of autistic kids act like they understand autism better than their autistic kids, and would often post insane stuff like how they, as "autism parents", were the true victims. at least, that's what i infer

@iro_miyaMy understanding is that it arose out of autism tags being swamped by non autistic voices, such as NT parents. It is meant to be a place for autistics only, whether they be self or officially diagnosed or even people who think they might be.

@iro_miya As opposed to being an autistic person's parents. It's a hashtag for autistic people themselves to use.

@iro_miya As far as I know, it originated on Twitter, where these huge, bitter conflicts were ongoing, between non-autistics (what came to be known generally as "autism moms" or non-autistic parents of autistic children, supporters of Autism Speaks, or just any non-autistic harboring outdated concepts about autism, and who would ignore, insult, trivialize, and invalidate comments by people who were "actually autistic)" who tended to invade the autistic community twitter discussions and threads, using the #autistic tag or other tags, claiming to have superior knowledge about autism because they had "real" and "severely" autistic children, while also claiming the autistic adults on twitter falsely identified autistic, or who were alleged to be following a fad, indulging in fake "self-diagnoses" or who weren't autistic but instead "had Asperger's", or who were "high functioning" autistics who could hold jobs and speak, and several other similar forms of invalidation. So the #actuallyautistic tag was created as a tag just for autistics, and not to be used by non-autistics. It is not used to gate keep or oppose self-diagnosis. At least that's how it was explained on Twitter, and what I frequently encountered and witnessed over years there.

@iro_miya To add to what I just wrote, many of these "autism moms" (and dads too of course) were intent on waging hostile battles against the twitter autistic community. These battles could get really, really bad. Awful. Hideous. Some of these people set up accounts dedicated to waging these battles. They would defame, belittle, attack, and they'd get reported, sometimes suspended, then set up new accounts. It's a form of warfare.

@obrerx@neurodifferent.me I see. Other people had said it was to avoid the Autism Speaks-adjacent people, but you have the most detailed description of their conflict with the autistic community. Thanks for the summary :ablobcatheartsqueeze:

@iro_miya Posted by someone with autism rather than a parent of an autistic person, etc.
