@louis Hard to say for sure, but my thought was if there's any data that they haven't yet accessed, they might have access to more. I might need to ask someone who has more personal experience with search engine indexing. @sergeant

@calculsoberic @sergeant If you are privacy-oriented then don’t post stuff on the internet you don’t want them to see.I agree that their privacy-invasive practices are horrible and must be stopped. Meta just got fined 1.3bn$ from the EU. But trying to prevent them indexing the Fediverse is pointless. The Fediverse is public by design.

@louis @calculsoberic It's not the stuff you post on the internet. It's the meta data they collect. They're tracking and profiling you. It is possible to make it hard for them to do so.

@louis I could see they why (they use this data to send you personalized ads), but the how is more difficult. For example, Google seems to know that I've had my car for a long time and keeps sending me car ads :lego_laugh: @sergeant

@calculsoberic @louis VPN, Encrypted emailservices like #Protonmail and #Tutanota, encrypted messengers like #Threema and #Signal , alternative search engines like #searx.org and #duckduckgo. Using privacy oriented browsers like #Brave and hardened #Firefox like #LibreWolf and so on. There's a lot you can do to withold your personal data. Don't ever believe it's useless or a ran course. There are always things you can do to give away as less info as possible. Don't give in!

@calculsoberic I agree with you generally, but given the fediverse is generally instantiated by a bunch of random people, unless you actively block every server you don't know... You should assume zero privacy here too. But at least probably not used for ad targeting?

@louis @calculsoberic @sergeant One difference that's important to me would be that if they are blocked/defederated, they can't interact with or retrieve my posts via ActivityPub, so they can't include them in their servers' timelines next to their ads and propaganda.That's different from just being able to scrape our posts.
