I was always skeptical about the idea that conservative Christians opposed “trans” for sinister reasons that were very different from feminists’ reasons. (This is something that left-leaning feminists were telling me circa 2000.) I mean, what was the wrong reason for thinking people cannot be trapped in wrongly-sexed bodies, or that they cannot change sex? Is there a wrong reason to think pigs can’t fly?The first time I heard Brandon Showalter, I knew that my skepticism had been correct. @polarisera Most conservative Christians do prioritize abortion, yes. However, many, including Showalter, have a perfect understanding of the trans issue. It’s not hard. Someone could have eight more important issues and still understand it.

@Cousin_Isobel There is definitely an overlap, but the conservative christian will never your friend. They do make a hell of lot more sense than liberal wokesters and appear to have more respect for others boundaries as long as theirs are respected as well, unlike the wokesters who will tear you to pieces if you don't do as they tell you to. It's just really shit at this point in time. Or, just different challenging times for now. It will get better.

@polarisera I kind of get the idea that Republicans are more bottom-up than Democrats, and that their primaries are more genuinely grassroots. I think enough primary voters demand an anti-abortion candidate that it’s hard to be as strategic as you suggest.Democratic primary voters, on the other hand, take what they’re given. If party leadership wants trans, it gets trans, grassroots be damned.

@LadyMont I’m just talking about the issue of “gender identity,” rather than whether we have enough in common to be friends. I have Christian relatives, so I could probably be friends with some conservative Christians, but it would be difficult to share a political party because of abortion.I would be curious to ask them how they decide which Biblical directives (e.g., remembering the Sabbath and keeping it holy) are just for Christians and which (e.g., not having an abortion) should legally be mandated for everyone. Maybe that would be a good reason to make friends, if only out of curiosity.

@Cousin_Isobel I have those types in the family, conservative christians. They (my family that is) are hypocrites and will change the interpretation of the bible at their leisure. They like to pretend to be openminded welcoming christians. Until they get you, and swiftly turn around. Grandma was a diehard christian, her stance on the bible: "Don't believe everything you read in the bible. Take the Holy Virgin for instance, Lord knows I tried, I never managed to pull something that off." 🤣 Now that's an attitude you can work with and agree to disagree with. Those conservatives, holy yikes.

I've read so much about these type of fundies and from people who escaped those cults. Racism within those cults are very real. The stories are gut wrenching. Fundamentally they believe the nations are the Lord's. But I think it depends on how you clarify that. Do you understand it as the Lord is actually the real power behind all nations even Russia right now. That what ever is happening there. God is actually using Russia even though they are doing something wrong. God is using their evil desire to bring around an eventual good. Or whether you interpret it as God is above all nations but not until we have used armies and force to make that a reality. As we understand it, like a Christian north Korea. @Cousin_Isobel A strict Biblical literalist or 'fundamentalist' Christian will be opposed to the beliefs and practices of transgenderists and their supporters primarily because these go against 'the Word of God', or in other words, certain passages in the Bible. For example, Genesis 1.27: 'male and female created he [God] them' and Deuteronomy 22.5, 'The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God.' In Genesis 3.16 God ordains the subordination of wives to their husbands: 'he shall rule over thee', a theme taken up in several places in the New Testament epistles. The author of the first epistle to Timothy (supposed to be the Apostle Paul) goes even further: 'I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence' (2.12). (I'm quoting from the Authorised or King James translation, since that was the translation preferred by the fundie Christians in my own family.) Not all conservative Christians are strict Biblical literalists. But I think they would generally tend to take the line that a man "living as a women" or a woman "living as a man" is in contravention of 'the Word of God'. And that is a very big deal with them.

I’m sure I can only get a small taste of what is out there by looking around online.I take your point about the sort of Mandate of Heaven mindset (with Putin and even the CCP being part of God’s plan) vs. something Christians must actively create. Sometimes, I worry about the former, with some Christians looking at the horrible things that are going on and thinking that the solution is to just pray that God’s will be done. I’m not sure whether I prefer that or the Christian army.
