really having trouble deciding on a mastodon instance to move to. was liking how qoto.org seemed, til i noticed they've defederated mastodon.social, which is baffling and sorta seems like a red flag!indieweb.social, typo.social, and front-end.social seem cool, but overly specific given my interests? maybe i should just choose a domain based on anti-aesthetics (beige.party?) and be done

@sabbatical It was my understanding that qoto.org was silencing mastodon social - not defederating them. Many instances had to silence social temporarily because they were being bombarded by hundreds or thousands of crypto spam including unwanted direct messages. If it is silencing then you would still see mastodon.social posts. Of those you are following.

@evelyntheriault ahh, interesting. would i also have a way to see .social replies on posts i'm viewing? that's a problem for me now and part of why i want to move. for example, i follow an old twitter-friend at @levisan and so can see his posts even though mastodon.social is silencing (?) his instance, but when i click through to see replies to his posts, they're hidden from me.

@sabbatical @evelyntheriault The un-federating is so confusing. I thought at first it was supposed to just mean you wouldn't see users of unfederated accounts when browsing, but now I'm starting to think it means you only see them if you're following them 🤷♂️

a bunch of others i looked at seem defed-happy — like they just blanket ban any instance that's ever tolerated any jerkwads. which, more power to them but that's not where i wanna be. i can block problematic domains myself if i want, thanks.

@sabbatical As @adam was saying recently (not sure on which podcast I heard it now) it seems like most instances are just borrowing someone else's block-list, instead of actually blocking the instances they know all users of their instance won't want to see

If you don't like defederations, try this Pleroma/Soapbox instance. You also might like berserker.town
