Free AWS or Azure training... it's a trap. Don't fall for it. They want you to learn their non-transferable, proprietary interfaces so that you're trapped in their monoculture, and recommend their vastly overpriced services to your customers. Many people who work with these technologies as consultants can make a lot of $ because their fees seem low compared to the massive costs of those cloud services (compared to competing services). They're exploiting the broad ignorance of the market.

Note - this message was triggered by an unsolicited email invitation I just got to AWS training in which I have less than zero interest. (and that negative interest manifests itself as anti-corporate cloud truth-bombs)

@lightweight I suspect the skills are more transferrable than they let on...Judging by my experience listening to others speak AWS jargon!

@alcinnz my impression is that most people learning tech don't really know/like tech and are just looking for a lucrative job that doesn't involve working outside in the weather. Unlike you or me (or many in the Fediverse), a lot of people don't embrace change and aren't good at extrapolating their knowledge of things. I've developed the strong impression these legions of inflexible folk are the mainstays of big-tech's stranglehold on the business market.

@lightweight Honestly, I can't blame them. But it does make our job harder!

@lightweight At the same time I'm sure there's people who say I'm not embracing change when NFTs or metaverse or GPTs fail to excite me...Or when I insist there has to be a technical (not financial) reason why some software should be made a service.

@alcinnz I simply blame them for this: they're exploiting ignorance, and encouraging it - even glorifying it and making it seem 'leet' for their own profit. Yes, understandable, but I don't find self-interest at the expense of the greater good admirable.

@alcinnz @lightweight You understand one cloud provider - you understand them all!Just like operating systems or programming languages. There are zealots who righteously explain why their favourite is best in all ways - but intelligent and competent people can transfer the common patterns from one specific implementation to another, as well as identifying the strengths and weaknesses of each.

@j @alcinnz I think the key qualification in that is 'intelligent and competent people"... I'd add 'motivated', too, and I've got the inkling there're fewer of them out there than we might think.

@lightweight I even got a bloody cold call to tell me that I would be getting an e-mail. Told them no to...They must be getting desperate.
