Quote-tweeting, when disagreeing, is rude, the purpose being to mock, to make an example of, to funnel the anger of your audience. It's weird seeing people complain about #Mastodon b/c they lack the means to bully other people. All other uses are misleading, given that plain links on the web are perfectly acceptable for referring to some needed context. My migration to Mastodon felt good, as it lacks the popularity, the culture, the features responsible for #Twitter's toxic environment.

@alexelcu I'm not a fan of quotes, that said quoting is available in the :fediverse: , many other software that federated with :mastodon: uses quotes and it's not used with malice intentions. It's all about the context, here we have much more close moderation and the majority of instances doesn't allow toxicity.More over, there's studies that even back on Twitter, the quote feature doesn't incentive people to be "more toxic".

@Andres I haven't seen the studies, but rather the claims of former Twitter employees, I don't believe such claims, and I'd have a hard time being convinced by those studies. As there are also studies claiming that Facebook and Twitter do contribute to negative mental health outcomes, for most people, most of the time. In the context of Twitter, which aggressively optimized for engagement, you'd have a hard time distinguishing causality after the fact, and I trust my experience moreā¦

@Andres I know that quotes are already available on the Fediverse, plus they've been announced for Mastodon as well. It's a losing battle, but I can't help but notice that many are quite literally arguing for the ability to bully, while also noticing just how rude and adversarial conversations are on Twitter; with the culture of shaming by quoting being a big part of it.And people cried for more control, like the ability to remove yourself from a quote, but Twitter never listened, b/c $$$.

@alexelcu The difference is that we can report the bullies, there is hundreds of times more chances here to be effective.I'm hopeful about quotes being "under control" on :mastodon:

@alexelcu I used to like QTs for the ability to start an alternative thread of discussion and not bother the people whose original tweet it was. Now I feel like if I want to comment on something, the original author has to get notified of my reply and all subsequent replies.

@xbsharp There are legitimate uses for quote tweets, like adding your thoughts to something you like and want to share. I don't see why normal links are not enough.Quote-tweets are not just previews of the link. The author of the quoted tweet also gets notified, the tweet is displayed in full, and due to post limits, the nuance is missing. This is also a boon to those thriving on drama, as by criticizing them, their filth infects people's timelines. No such thing as bad publicity, etc.

@xbsharp And criticism someone via a quote-tweet is like speaking about them, while in the same room, instead of speaking with them. This is what makes it rude.Maybe I'm blowing this out of proportion, however, many features of Twitter (or Facebook) were engineered for maximizing engagement, often at the cost of people's mental health. Outrage drives engagement, something known since the dawn of yellow journalism.

@alexelcu quote tweeting is also used a lot by journalist (for ex) to react and contextualize. But the pb is essentially client ux I think: I'm almost sure we could have quoted links, be it tweet, article or other, presented with the quoted link above or below the answer/context/etc and that would help a lot.And yes, people are lazy on tweeter/Mastodon, having to click on the link is the best way to never know what was in the link. Just to say there's legitimate usage.

@fanf42 OTOH, journalists could practice journalism, instead of punditry and reacting to shit people say on Twitter.

@alexelcu @xbsharp ok, so I often use quote tweet to share insightfull thread by giving access to the root of it and letting the author know about it. Just link is :- ankward from my phone and client (go the tweet, copy link, start to write, forgot some important aspect, save in draft, go back to the tweet, go back to draft etc)- miss the gotcha of the thread first post, which is often interesting

@fanf42 Wanting to share stuff, while adding more info or opinion to interesting posts, is the only use-case I care about.Letting the author know about it, on the other hand, is one of the big problems with quote-tweets IMO, versus just links, links which can have previews.@xbsharp

@alexelcu I follow several reporters on Russia War in Ukraine, and they practice journalism, and their use of quoted tweet is good, and several switched to Mastodon, and the fluidity of communication and reports is worse. For them (spending more time doing what they are trying to do), and for me as a reader

@fanf42 Right, reporting from the ground in Ukraine is one of the few areas that looks like real journalism these days (on the media channels that I follow). And Mastodon could surely use some improvements.

@alexelcu @xbsharp i don't understand why, is it link to harassment? I often tag them in all case, so they are noticed in any case.. Is it a bad practice?
