The Mundaneum in Mons is a fascinating visit. It's an early, analog version of a search engine. The creators of the project had the ambition to catalogue as many non-fiction books, newspapers, scientific journals as possible. And classify all of them not only by author or title but also by theme. They invented the decimal classification system that's still used by libraries nowadays.

@pony But those were like, civil administration archives, not a library, right?

@DiegoBeghin yes it's also much more modern (1920's, but used into like early 00's still)

@pony @DiegoBeghin Yes, that picture seems like the simplest and most efficient possible solution, way better than, say, two rows of file cabinets half as high.

@DougWar40k @DiegoBeghin for storage probably yes (i think even modern library archive are mechanized to some extent), at least spatially, but for the actual purpose of the building, administration, combining retrieval and processing is probably dumb as it makes difficult to add more workers when needed or easily redistribute documents when they are not evenly loaded

@pony @DiegoBeghin I was way kidding, that is obviously a terrible solution.

@pony Wonder how many people are called Lenin in Czechia. Quite a few boomers in Brazil with that as a first name, it was popular with educated commies.

@DiegoBeghin this is possible to find in public data using a website processing them (https://www.kdejsme.cz), telling us there was one person with first name Lenin and one (different one) with family name Lenin in 2010-11it's extremely uncommon for a bunch of reasons (parents still kinda aren't and definitely weren't allowed pre-1989 to pick any first name for children, would need to be on a list or justified by some official paper, Lenin just wouldn't make it really)

@DiegoBeghin (there are no new data because the ministry of interior in 2020 decided they actually don't do this, shouldn't do this and are maybe not even allowed to)

@pony They aren't allowed to publish stats on the distribution of names? I do remember a similar website for France (as a teenager I would look up funny or sweary names there)

@DiegoBeghin probably are, their statement is more like not our job the statistics office should be doing it (maybe it does, haven’t checked)
