       Another jewel!This Hardwood Heartwood Buprestid (Texania campestris) Was resting on a bole of a dead tree. The larvae feed in American Beech and Sycamore trees. They are about the beefiest beetle you will come across in north america. I find them to be absolutely gorgeous as well.#Nature #Beetles #Macro #Insects #Buprestidae

       @twizzt Ah, I knew I’d seen that beetle before (well, not *that particular exact individual*, but that kind of beetle)! I realize now that I should've recognized it as a buprestid, but I never did (I'm better with bees). The subtle colors on yours are gorgeous! Even without beech or sycamore (that I know of) in southwestern Oregon, I'm guessing mine is a close relative, if not the same species? Here's the one I found (along with the easily recognizable golden buprestid: Buprestis aurulenta).

       @savebees I think it is one of the pine borers, but I'm no expert in these. If I remember right, we had three species in MN that looked nearly identical. That green one is stunning! Great photos

       @twizzt Ah yes, you've put me on the right track! The one that looked much like yours appears to be a Western sculptured pine borer (Chalcophora angulicollis). As to the green one, I rarely saw those, but they were so stunning to see glittering in the sun... I’d drop everything (well, other than the camera!) when I saw one :) I had a pile of choice downed wood that I kept for years (until our wildfire), particularly so as to encourage them. Here's a couple more shots of the golden buprestid!
