Did someone say #WeevilWednesday ?! And it's still #InverteFest ?!Such weevil. I wish I knew my weevils! One late May, I gleefully observed this adorable character ambling along a fern. I'd been crouching down (as one so often does!), gazing at spots where sunlight penetrated the trees, to see what six-legged wonders might turn up (this was just across the McKenzie River from my place at the time, in Oregon’s Willamette National Forest).Where there's a weevil there's a way!

@twizzt Ah, I knew I’d seen that beetle before (well, not *that particular exact individual*, but that kind of beetle)! I realize now that I should've recognized it as a buprestid, but I never did (I'm better with bees). The subtle colors on yours are gorgeous! Even without beech or sycamore (that I know of) in southwestern Oregon, I'm guessing mine is a close relative, if not the same species? Here's the one I found (along with the easily recognizable golden buprestid: Buprestis aurulenta).

@twizzt Ah yes, you've put me on the right track! The one that looked much like yours appears to be a Western sculptured pine borer (Chalcophora angulicollis). As to the green one, I rarely saw those, but they were so stunning to see glittering in the sun... I’d drop everything (well, other than the camera!) when I saw one :) I had a pile of choice downed wood that I kept for years (until our wildfire), particularly so as to encourage them. Here's a couple more shots of the golden buprestid!

Excellent article referencing many studies! The new one for me was the art 🐝🎨“When bees were given paintings they had never seen before, they still visited the rewarding artist, suggesting they can discriminate between art styles. This extends beyond Picasso and Monet, with bees learning to discriminate between Monet and Indigenous artist Noŋgirrŋa Marawili in a single afternoon.”#WorldBeeDay #bees #pollinators https://theconversation.com/bees-can-do-so-much-more-than-you-think-from-dancing-to-being-little-art-critics-204039

@twizzt Coming from Twitter where characters are at such a premium, watermarking felt helpful for easily sharing photos with credit. I also have Lightroom configured now to drop a semi-opaque watermark in any of four corners when exporting for sharing. When tastefully done, I don’t find them distracting!
