I remeber that it was simply forbidden for students to get to school with the car in highschoolOne of the main reasons: there's simply no space for thousands of cars around a school :amaze: Most kids came on bike, walking or with the bus and maaaaybe a few got dropped off by their parents but that's because their bike was broken..

@stux Yes exactly! I went to a high school, which took me almost an hour to cycle to. Crossing a huge bridge in Rotterdam (van Brienenoordbrug) both ways. Only in the worst of winter i was allowed to have a public transport card. And i think for a high school of ~ 2000 people, we had at most 50 parking spaces around the building.

It's also quite normal that kids walk to school by their own! 💪 Or play outside without a parent constantly looking at them.. Here in the Netherlands it would be kinda suuper creepy if you constantly hang out around kids actually

@stux Hahaha! Hunebedden provincie represent! :yayblob: But i think it was, and mostly still is normal right, for teenagers to cycle to high school. I was an extreme example because the high school was a more regional one (raised gereformeerd vrijgemaakt, so high school was also gereformeerd vrijgemaakt).Tractors were not an option for us. :P

@stux totally agree, often no time for free play at all, either some sports music or other lessons after school, it’s mad and bad for kids

@stux well it depends on the age. Young children get easily injured when playing or climbing things. Starting from 8 y/o you can let them play alone outside, but you still need to check frequently on them in case something happens. And this includes regular fights among children or inappropriate language. Until they're ready for a smartphone, you need to be close. As a parent I don't wish my boys to get a device before middle school

@stux my high school was a 15 minute drive, or a 42 minute cycle with a 450 climb. Growing up rural in America, cars were the main way to get fur than then a few miles. The school bus would take 45 minutes to get to school. Only about 500 kids in the entire school, so 30-60 cars were typical for a day. Most kids carpooled if they knew someone with a car.

@stux it’s so weird that as a kid, we never had supervision, but most of my peers Hyper-supervise their kids to the point where the majority of their 21+ kids still live with them. So weird.

@stux I was older than my classmates because of a winter birthday and a mother that held out sending me to kindergarten until the last moment possible.I started driving midway through the 10th grade.Usually at my school in the U.S. it was 11th graders that started driving. We were a rural school. Most students lived miles away and there was no public transportation or sidewalks. There were school buses, but most would spend more than an hour and half each way on the bus.

@stux Not Netherlands....LAMy highschool was 9km away.175m down and then 100m up to the school. Riding a bicycle to school did not happen.Local City College that I did bicycle to was ~8 km but 200m down. Dad would come pick me up in the car to go 200m back up to home.

@stux Yes, we have noticed on holiday in the Netherlands that children enjoy much more freedom and fun than in the UK. Lovely to see them peddling everywhere on those lovely safe cycle tracks next to roads. That's what childhood should be like. Also the fact bikes have priority, car drivers have to give way to bikes. Fantastic.

@stux Yeah, not so many hills there 😁 A few kids rode to school, not many, others came by the school bus and parent's cars.I don't think anyone came by public transport.

@stux I live in the UK, near a few schools. And the amount of traffic is remarkable. Seems like almost every parent brings their child in a car. Dozens or hundreds of cars, seemingly all bringing one or two children each. Massive queues, everyone totally stressed out at being stuck in traffic.I really hope we in the UK learn from the Netherlands about the huge advantages of building shared spaces that are people-first.

@stux Same here, in the UK - or at least it was like that, when I was a kid, in the 70s/80s. Seems like something changed though, in the time between - now the ‘school run’ is a big thing and a nightmare for anyone that lives near a school. Same, re. playing out, without supervision. What happened to the mass games of football that I was always doing, after tea?

@stux The schools here are all along the same road. It's 70-90 km/h with blind curves, no bike lanes, and no shoulder. It is far too dangerous to bike to school

@stux I remember that the first high school I went to require you to be a junior for a parking permit. I managed to miss by half a credit because I calculated wrong so I was technically a 10th grader for 2 years in a row. The few times I drove to school I parked on the street about a block away, not on campus. Due to some unrelated issues, wound up transferring to a school that was much less strict about who could park on campus. Life was good.
