@marcan thanks, some of these points are new to me. Where would one learn about the state of wayland, though, aside from random blog posts? Maybe wayland devs could do more communication on this topic?

@zekjur @marcan Hector is kind of an exception, but many devs are not great communicators. I try to make sure people know about a lot of this going on over on my channel but there will always be people that have out dated information

@BrodieOnLinux @zekjur @marcan I'm making a wayland compositor (stardust) and even I use your channel as a sort of wayland news source because it's that bad of a problem :S

@BrodieOnLinux it's gotten like 10x more usable since you covered it, we have wayland popup support now finally and have got XR-specific portals and such planned out (also a better description for the whole project too when i remember to update the website) and a better roadmap and... yea. Thanks for covering it though, it's actually gotten a lot of people interested and helping contribute!!

@marcan Yep, I'm subscribed to that issue and got the idea for the workaround from the comment there 🙂

@sa0bse @marcan Us over on Hyprland don't have that issue anymore because we have a forked portal

@BrodieOnLinux Oooh, interesting, I've seen pretty pictures and heard good things about Hyprland... However this seems a worthwhile feature to try it out for. Thanks for pointing it out! @marcan

@sa0bse @marcan I wasn't even aware there was a workaround for it on Sway, that was one of the big reasons I didn't want to switch to Sway

@BrodieOnLinux I kinda went to sway in anger, that's not the full story though. The full story is that I used EXWM (Emacs X11 Window Manager) for several years. Then I got fed up on some of the oddities and went to i3 because it was something I knew, however I was also tired of X11 (because of experiences in EXWM) so I took my i3 config and went to sway 🙂 @marcan

@marcan A crucial missing bit for me: a non-tiling window manager that is as simple as OpenBox and gets out of my way, mostly. Or is this niche filled by a compositor these days? Not sure about the nomenclature.I'm not really interested in a full Desktop Environment like KDE or Gnome, and neither am I keen on paradigm-shifting things like i3. Call me a grumpy old man (because I am), but that's how my productivity works, and I don't think it's an unreasonable thing to ask for.
