@seth Define God. : )There are definitions of God that satisfied Einstein and versions of God that Einstein did not subscribe to (those latter versions seem to coincide largely with the supposed God worshipped by evangelicals).My understanding is that Einstein is not unfamiliar with science, so maybe the two beliefs can be held at the same time.

@seth Heās in good company. I did it at 7 in the Bible Belt, which got me *very* good at arguing with adults who hadnāt a non-credulous bone in their bodies. Itās amazing how the skills I developed in the 10-ish years after are still useful today.

@RuthODay @seth I think Einstein weaselled a bit - He said he believed in āSpinozaās God,ā which is basically saying that āGodā is the universe and all the natural laws. He was an agnostic (i.e. there wasnāt evidence to prove the existence or non-existenceāgood luck with the latterāof a god) who didnāt believe in an afterlife. I think starting with a definition of āGodā is a good idea. The word has been used to mean so many things that without some agreement of terms, the discussion is pointless. I once had a long and confusing discussion with a student that finally reached clarity when I realized that he was using the word āconsciousnessā interchangeably with āsoul.ā I thought we were talking about psychology, he thought we were talking about religion š

@MichaelPorter @seth He may have been agnostic (I donāt know enough to comment) but he seems to refer to his idea of God in a few quotes that I have seen. Defining God as the universe and all natural laws seems that he defines God to be equal to Science. So, based on Einsteinās definition, OPās kid does believe in God. : )

@RuthODay @seth Being the famous scientist that he was, and responsible for redefining reality, I think Einstein was probably pushed by a lot of people with the āWhat about God?ā question. His answers come across as diplomatically saying he doesnāt believe in God, at least in the form of any conscious entity with an interest in people.I donāt think itās helpful to take any old definition and then say, āSee? God!āI could say āGod is green grass, Iām going to roll around in God,ā but Iād be wasting everyoneās time if they were interested in a discussion of theology.
