Interesting to see that Open Collective can now serve as "employer" for open source contributors and provide benefits like health insurance and retirement accounts:https://opencollective.com/opensource/updates/open-source-collective-is-hiring-maintainersOpens up some new possibilities for groups who want to make a living working on Free Software without having to manage a non-profit or business entity.

I have been thinking a lot lately about how one might create a collective of Free Software hackers that create valuable projects which are funded by grants and donations.Tools like this just make it more tempting to consider.

@daviwil It's really a great project. I managed to convince my employer to donate to Free Software and Open Collective helps a lot with this.We currently spend certain percentages to projects which are important to us and the rest goes to Open Collective which, we hope, then can distribute it to projects we don't have on our radar.

@nebucatnetzer That's awesome! More companies should do that.

@daviwilI'm sure some would do it. They just need someone to carry it internally. If I wouldn't have asked for it and took the time to explain it they wouldn't have done it on their own but once I did the owner saw the value quite easily. Now I get a fixed budget each year which I can freely donate.I don't know if I can share the amount but I'm quite please by it.I try to focus on smaller projects or communities over companies (think Debian instead of Ubuntu).
