Yes, I am a person who presses the "I do NOT tip" Or just ignore it all the way..Prices are insanly high already and I refuse to let a business or employee guild trip me into giving a tip..If you don't earn enough from sales and gotta live from tips I have a tip for you..Raise your damn prices

@stux And if you aren't handing the cash directly to the person serving you, they often get a small % of the actual tip. Electronic tipping often goes to support more price gouging.

@stux to the point, I help homeless people, so. With food, with blankets, with money. I've been near homelessness myself. But I suppose Tarantino made a movie and suddenly everyone had an opinion.

@stux I think it's a surprise when people come to Australia that we really don't tip. Almost never. I think the only people that do are visitors. Or me when drunk and have actually received exceptional service. What we do have though is "penalty rates" where hospitality workers have to be paid overtime on public holidays. So the venues typically increase all prices by 10-15%.

@stux Yes and for sure the CEOs of national chains like Starbucks & Olive Garden are *not* depending on tips for their lifestyles! US tipping is shameful. Or maybe shame-less is the right term.

@stux yet another cultural clash between Europe and the USA. Of course youโre right. If waiters or any services employee doesnโt have a decent salary, itโs not because theyโre not tipped enough. Itโs because their employment is exploiting them. Also, tipping for the economy sucks since itโs not taxed. Another thing most Americans donโt understand. The usefulness of well taxed economy. Social democracies thrive on that because health, education and public security are mostly free

@stux I always tip my server at the self-checkout. Getting the money from those tips I give myself is the only way I can afford the groceries.

@stux bold of you to assume that the people who depend on tips are the people who can choose to raise prices, or who would benefit from raised prices.

@stux In the Netherlands it depends on when i tip. Not when a server makes a single sandwich for me to go. But most of the time i will tip the delivery driver in cash (1 euro or something), the people actually delivering your food are almost always underpaid and when i have the luxury to order food, i can also add a little bit on top for the actual human. It's not their fault.Of course it being baked into the culture as it is in the USA is out of control.

@stux real simple, because some wages are tied to tips. it's a problem that should be fixed, w living wages, not people posting a blanket opinion that cannot possibly work for every situation unless you're a dick.for example - if you are eating at a restaurant that doesnt pay their servers a living wage, and refuse to tip, you are a POS

@stux The tipping culture in US of A is so wrong on so many levels.... Mainly because it needs to make up for the modern slavery exploitation...Just like needing philantropy to fix your rotten tax system and lack of general healthcare plan....A civilised society with a fair and functioning tax system and fair wages, should make philantropy and tipping superfluous...

@stux I fully support this because things wonโt change unless we stop encouraging and validating shitty practices. The public shouldnโt be guilted into paying a living wage for the employees of establishments.

@stuxSame. I don't rip at fast food places. An actual restaurant, where the waitstaff can actually make a difference in my impression, yes. But then the tip will vary greatly with their ability to do the job. If I go to Denny's and you're not keeping my coffee cup topped up- you are not getting much tip. That's a basic requirement of a diner's waitstaff.

@stux Generally I agree tipping is a broken system, but not tipping doesnโt really help the server who has no control over prices and is just trying to make rentโฆIt could be a path to a solution, but it will hurt a lot of people on the wayโฆ

@stux Iโve actually been to some restaurants that have a Tip line item as part of the check PLUS a blank line for a tip. Personally, I usually leave no extra tip if gratuity was automatically included.

@stux people are paid less because there's an assumption of tips built into their pay structure. Not tipping while this situation is still in place won't change the system. It will just screw over an employee further If food is too expensive to tip in addition, I'd suggest not eating out

@stux Corporations seem to be earning *plenty*.https://www.commondreams.org/news/food-price-hikes-us-hungerBut corporations don't pay enough in wages. Tips are the worker's lifeline. What the US needs are strong unions and a progressive government that supports them. Right now, corporations break labor laws with impunity (cf. Starbucks and how it treats its unions). Corpns *love* to outsource expenses. Tips are how companies outsource part of their payroll expense. Go after companies, not employees.#tips #unions #capitalism

@stux I tip in the normal places where it was always a thing, like at a restaurantโฆI tip my rideshare driver and rate them highly. I tip the hairdresser, although Iโm not sure whyโฆbut Iโm not going to tip fast food and other places where that was never a thing. I also donโt give a dollar or whatever for charities because I donโt even know where itโs going and I donate independently to things as it is.

@stux Out of control here in Canada too. Everyone everywhere is asking for a tip, and the reason why is because people do it. It's social blackmail. People feel cheap/bad if they don't tip. I purchased a coffee and you handed it to me, how does that warrant a tip? I purchased a product not a service. If anyone ever comments or is disappointed you didn't tip (and if they, do they suck), just tell them you can't afford to.

@stux Come to Japan, you'll love it. Not only is tipping not a thing here, if you try to tip all kind of awkward situations will happen. I repeat: Do not tip in Japan unless you want to embarrass yourself and whoever you are tipping.
