@purple We actually tried that once. Sadly, like many other groups that tried doing search engines, it failed.

@purple @wordshaper yahoo originally was catalogued by librarians afaik.but google was able to get more results by mass scraping and won out.

@purple @misc I agree! I also think search engines should be owned by libraries as public utilities.

@purple @misc I low key started thinking it about how we could write a scalable system that could be public owned / federated; I did get some feedback about problems with my ideas and a book recommendation.I’m rather focused on my job hunt but I dislike the corporate ownership and “SQUIRREL!!!!111” type hype chasing investor pressure that comes with it. I think we’re already seeing how it’s a problem and will continue to be so.We do know that at some level, it’s possible scale out search; Google already does it. I’m not an expert in information retrieval so all my initial ideas are pretty basic and probably not workable. But I really think people need to own it.

@purple That's how we got ontological hierarchy systems like Yahoo (original "directory" incarnation) isn't it?

@elithebearded @purple iirc, Yahoo hired actual librarians back in the day.
