I have something on the order of 70K Chrome bookmarks. OK, that's a fair number. But I'm at a loss as to how to get them to sync to an Android 13 tablet again after they just suddenly vanished from that device. There isn't even a Bookmarks section per se anymore, just "Mobile Bookmarks". Needless to say, I've tried all the tricks like turning sync on and off in various ways, logging out of Chrome, resetting Chrome back to its base version and reupdating, blah blah blah. Nothing works. You'd think a "simple" function like bookmarks sync would be dependable, but ... and yeah, you can see people complaining about this on G support forums to no end. And to be clear, "factory reset" is NOT a viable option. Anything I've missed? Thanks!

@lauren It looks like Google is following in the footsteps of Apple by making things "easier" for users by removing more and more control. You would think an option to save the bookmarks to a file would be there.

@atanas You can export and import bookmark files from desktop Chrome. But I've never found a way to import them back from a file in Android Chrome. Of course, the file could be treated like any other file and opened in Chrome on Android that way, but it would be static and not syncing.

@aka_quant_noir In this case it's Android 13 on a tablet.

@lauren have you tried pulling them into Microsoft Edge, and then having Edge sync from laptop to tablet? And then import them back into Chrome?

@ThomM Like I said, there is no way I know of to import bookmarks from a file into Android Chrome. Also, I don't have Edge on any systems anymore.

@lauren I see. So export / import works to move a snapshot of the bookmarks, but not dynamically syncing.

@lauren Can you hook it directly up to a regular computer? There may be a way to find the missing bookmark file in the file system, copy that to the computer and/or restore it to where it is supposed to go.

@ThomM Useless, like most G forum answers. All that says is use sync or a third party app. No way I'm screwing around with those third party apps for my bookmarks, the last thing I need is them screwed up on my other devices. And sync doesn't work. The amount of misinformation and useless information on this topic around the Web is most impressive. I'm very irritated at G about this one.

@aka_quant_noir There does not appear to be a way to import bookmark files into Android Chrome (as I already noted). Internally, I believe they're stored in a database not in a flat file, so that kills that route.

@atanas There is no export/import for Android Chrome bookmarks files that I know of. Period.

@lauren Yeah that sounds like the hardest part. If you could export them at least you might still access them somehow. I've had similar issues with Firefox trying to sync between phone and desktop. Functionality = not great. Sorry I couldn't be of help.

@lauren delete and reinstall? When you login the first time it should pull them over.

@Shaddakim You can't delete Chrome from the system through ordinary means. You can remove all the updates, but the base version remains then the updates go right back in. I tried.

@lauren Looks like the sync has been turned off for large bookmark collections. I find android so annoying at times, but I'm using it via a Xiaomi Miui version to add to my problems. https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=1347466

@lauren Lauren, there are two browsers in Android now. The default is a simplified Browser which doesn't share bookmarks with chrome. Open up a web page and tap on the three dots Menu in the top right corner. The bottom entry should be open in Chrome. Once you're in chrome, all your bookmarks will be there and you can bookmark the site just like you normally would. It infuriates me. But that's what it is.

@johnb48 It sounds like you're describing Webview. That's not what I'm in. I'm definitely in Chrome, and those bookmarks used to be there -- and the browser still offers to sync them as it always has. It just isn't doing so anymore.

@lauren Chrome keeps its bookmarks in the web. Do you have bookmarks in other instances of Chrome on other devices?

@johnb48 I've been syncing among multiple devices for many, many years. I also know how sync works internally. Doesn't help me.

@lauren Unfortunate as that has worked for me on laptops and I had hoped it would work on an Android tablet as well.Weird thing I just thought of: did it somehow log you out or switch to a Guest account? If it is not showing your Bookmarks Bar or Other Bookmarks (that is, only showing the Mobile Bookmarks) then maybe it is not communicating with your Chrome account properly and doesn't/can't see them. I think I had something similar when I switched phones.

@Shaddakim Laptops just use the "normal" Chrome build, not the Android build which is significantly different. The accounts are correct, and in fact everything is still syncing normally, so ...

@knizer Damn it, that's it. Getting that error on my tablet that now has no bookmarks. Oddly, my phone is still apparently syncing them all (just over 57K now, it seems). I'll push on this with Google. Thanks!
