Media literacy tip:The surge of climate-change conflicts will be presented to us as "ethnic tensions lead to violence" in the newspapers. The rise in climate refugees will be presented to us as "migrants seeking work."When you try to read a new situation using the language of the old broken economic system it's hard to see what's happening.

@zleap Social media is critical for that, yes.

@Loukas I get the impression that facebook and twitter users are more likely to react to a post, where as here we are more likely to think then react"The rise in climate refugees will be presented to us as "migrants seeking work."In terms of this and specifically climate change, This will affect everyone. Refugees are probably thought of going from one country to another. We know climate change will impact low lying and coastal areas, so this is going to create migration inland from a countries own people, if media / social media mix those people up with refugees from other countries it could be interesting and a shock to people as to how migrants and refugees are portrayed. If you live in New Orleans, and this gets flooded how are people going to cope with a huge migration to an inland city, I am not too good at geography in the US so I think Baton Rouge is inland (if not elsewhere) It will be interesting how a combination of right wing anti immigration retoric could potentially turn on people who are American citizens.

@zleap Yes there will be a lot of internal movement, which will also obscure the climate element since it will be interpreted as part of traditional patterns.

@zleap @Loukas American citizen here. Yes, we will have our own climate refugees here (we already do). The big one that I worry about is our western states failing from drought. The Colorado River is depleted and although the Sierra Nevada's got snow this year, reservoirs at Lake Mead and Lake Powell are still problematic. California's agriculture is struggling, 5th biggest economy in the world. https://geoffreydeihl.substack.com/p/what-is-joe-biden-thinking

@gdeihl @Loukas Not forgetting the Fault lines in California, the big one has been predicted to be coming for some time now, so if or when that happens it could cause a huge set of problems. While we can't do much about earthquakes just yet, other than hope buildings hold their own, but it is just an added factor, once it happens, we know that it will cause a huge migration and drain on other resources and no one seems prepared for this.We have a hosepipe ban here in Devon, UK. Reservior levels are still low, so we need to preserve water resources, if we get another mild then hot spring / summer then that won't help.

@zleap @Loukas Yes, the Big One ever lurks, for which there is no preparation. Similarly, no preparation in western states for the water crisis in the making for decades. Typical. There have been efforts to reduce municipal water use, like watering lawns, but those efforts are a drop in the bucket compared to agriculture. Arizona pumps its aquifers dry to grow alfalfa to feed Saudi cows, and Nevada is mining lithium, requiring 500,000 gallons of water for one ton of product. All quite insane.

@gdeihl @Loukas That is a crazy amount of water for such a small amount of Lithium,. People don't see that part of it, when comparing electric cars to oil based fuels.

@zleap @Loukas There are many issues with mining minerals, just as there are with any type of mining. It also runs over indigenous people once again, whether it's the lithium triangle in South America, or Thacker Pass in Nevada, for which I did a deep dive. Greenwashing at its finest.https://geoffreydeihl.substack.com/p/showdown-at-thacker-pass

@gdeihl @Loukas This is whjy research and critical thinking is so important and why the @ScienceMagazine article about making science papers for the reader is so important.
