The people who say "Mastodon will not be sufficient" or "Mastodon will not get enough users" or "Mastodon will not survive" still have the "Twitter mindset" and that's a fact.#Mastodon doesn't have to "gain traction" or be "popular" from that perspective.Back in the 90s I didn't think most of the people of this planet will some day be using the Internet. I was happy being that nerd boy within the 1% of the world's population who actually use Internet. Similarly, I'm completely happy to be the tech oriented guy who uses Mastodon instead of Twitter.I repeat: Mastodon does not have to be a "replacement". Mastodon does not "need" anything to "survive". It has already prospered. It's as hard for me to imagine all the 20 000+ Mastodon servers with their users just suddenly cease to exist as Internet would suddenly disappear. That just will not happen. #Mastodon #SocialMedia

@rolle success to a certain mindset means dominationdecentralization means success on terms many can't understandbut since traditional social media has become a toxic wasteland soon to be turned into content free horror indoctrination chambers by AI chatbots indistinguishable from real people, they can have their "success"

@rolle exectly! Everyone of us would probably love see Mastodon "succeed" in everyday life. Many of us wish that news portals and popular persons say: "Follow me on Mastodon".But we should remind ourselves that even if that does not happen (and it probably won't) - Mastodon is a success. As long as we, the users, are having fun, it's worth the whole thing. :)

@thomas YEAH. Word. And personally I'm completely fine that people are sharing links to other places like Reddit and even Twitter as long as the content is relevant and not harmful and the discussion is happening here. We should not silo ourselves but enjoy our lives the best way we can. Mastodon is perfect for that.

@rolle The Fediverse was around before Twitter was even a thing. Mastodon is just one of many clients that can access the Fediverse. What Twitter folk don't seem to like is that "Fishing for attention" doesn't work here. Unlike Twitter, you have to earn friendships and followers on the Fediverse. 🤷‍♂️

@rolle Agree 100%. #Mastodon is already a success as far as I'm concerned. Lots of cool, friendly, creative people to hang out with here, that's pretty much all I ever wanted. Nobody's fishing to "go viral" or get a "like" from some celebrity. The "hot takes" tend to be kinda chill 'round here. And that's fine with me! :mastodon: 👍 😁

@dick_turpin Yes! Good point. I was trying to make that with the Internet analogy. Many don't realize it's all bigger than just Mastodon. #Fediverse is a vast place and will just continue to expand, like space.

@rolle I feel like we’re all having a picnic in the park and there’s a journalist hovering over us wringing their hands and asking “But how will this picnic work AT SCALE??? Do you think this sandwich needs more features? Someone already left for work; we’ve lost 10% of our user base IN AN HOUR! Okay, I’m already typing up ‘Why I Left This Picnic And You Should Too’.”

@rolle In fact this is the original idea of an open and free internet, right? You can't have a free internet with big tech companies setting the rules and making people depend on them. So bye bye to 'T', 'F', and especially 'G' that is squeezing it self into my computers. There is only one way to get rid of them, just don't use their services, at all...I can tell you life is very well do-able without these moneymakers.🤗

@rolle I just substitute those claims to say something like ‘Mastodon will not make me rich or allow me to pedal influence’. That is what amounts to failure to them. They have zero interest in community beyond their own selfish ends.I am not here to get internet rich. I just want a community.

@rolle TBF, some folk cannot get their head around Fediverse so it's easier to use the name Mastodon. Personally, I don't like it because it encourages people to think there is only Mastodon a bit like a lot of novices think there is only mastodon.social which also isn't true.Throw into the mix that people can have their own instance and new users have a mind melt. 🤣

@harald You know with the Internet analogy I meant Fediverse too, that is my whole point. I just "answered" to those critical towards Mastodon. Many folks don't understand what Fediverse is and sometimes I tend to avoid speaking about it.

@rolle @warrioroflatte i think there are two different narratives (and two different groups) at play. One - can the #fediverse survive? Sure, of course. It already has. It doesn't need that many people / resources. Two - can the fediverse be the twitter replacement? Musk has shown us the world needs something like twitter (disaster alerts, news, public entities..). You are saying the answer to 1 is "yes", but many people are really asking 2. And many fedi-veterans want the answer to be "no"...

@rolle i remember the horror when i realized that everyone was getting an Internet connection now and all the stuff i wrote assuming that nobody i personally know will ever read it, could in fact be read.Luckily nobody actually wants to read twenty year old sulking rants from then teenage losers.People can come to fedi, or not. Doesn't matter. Fedi isn't going to disappear like corporate sites do.

@rolle The purpose of the internet is to smash a bunch of us together repeatedly in ways that we either enjoy, find useful, or can benefit from in some way. It’s about the people – not the tools that we use to get to each other.Mastodon is an amazing version of social media and you are absolutely correct, it is a "Twitter mindset".

@rolle the main reason why i've wanted mastodon (or more precisely fediverse in general) to "succeed" was because it would make my friends more likely to consider using it. I don't care whether companies, venture capitalists, etc. find it successful or, more accurately, profitable

@rolle i still have my twitter account from 2009 but was never much active there. It always felt like the big account‘s got all the attention. That was the big difference joining mastodon: a much more nicer vibe and that a lot is happening here with, by and through normal people, instead by companies or the famous. Besides all the tracking, ads and selling user data. The fewer followers here are still an advantage: that doesn’t attract the famous, advertisers and influencers.

@dick_turpin @rolle Nah, that's unfair. Twitter was, as with all other internet communities, great at connecting like-minded people. That was the idea behind hypertext/web, and continues through forums, social media, whatever.Where Twitter jumped the shark is twofold: not making money, and claiming they could make money if there was "more free speech", i.e. people who will pay to be offensive.

@_thegeoff I saw someone on the TV the other day, and I could kick myself for not writing down what he said because it was probably the truest thing I'd ever heard.Basically, he was saying that we should talk to terrorists, radicals, offensive speech etc. because it's only through dialogue these problems can be solved. Banning them, blocking or ignoring them, in actual fact, only serves to make them stronger because ingrained in human nature is the need to do what we are told we shouldn't.
