Still sad about this - not because I shut down my project, but more because of how people can be. I was labeled as a "tech bro asshole.". Time has passed, and I guess I'm ready to talk about it now.Public Firehose Project Shutters After Backlash https://wedistribute.org/2025/02/fedionfire-shutdown via @news #FediOnFire #Fediverse

@monarchist Yes, there's this certain privacy police group here. I've been blocking every single one of them since that incident. They're so hateful and intentionally aggressive. They truly believe their toxicity is justified, and that's dangerous. @news

Today marks exactly five years sober for me. I quit when I was a microbrewery beer enthusiast and a so-called moderate drinker. Sometimes I overdid it, especially when I could pour a pint of fresh IPA from the brewery's taps. In total, I managed to review about 5,000 different craft beers to Untappd and whatnot.Life didn't magically improve overnight after I quit, but reflux and stomach problems disappeared completely, and my migraines and panic attacks became less frequent. I feel better now than I did back then.I think I'm going to keep it this way.#Alcohol #Sobriety #Sober

I may have exposed myself to scrutiny by officials even posting about this, but did you know why Finnish Mastodon admins can't mention donations? Welcome to Finland’s rahankeräyslaki (Fundraising Act) - a law so problematic it's been submitted to UN human rights reviews and noted in OECD reports on Finland's civic space. Finnish people often say Finland is "Sääntö-Suomi" (Finland of Rules) because we have too many rules and laws. Most of them are there to protect us, but some work against us. It can go too far. Here's the problem: The law defines "fundraising" as any appeal to the public to give money. "Appeal" means any verbal, written or other request or invitation. This includes simply stating "we accept donations" with any payment information or bank account number on your website. The Electronic Frontier Finland (Effi) case shows how absurd this gets. Effi, a digital rights nonprofit, was prosecuted for rahankeräysrikos (fundraising crime) just for having text on their website saying they could accept donations per their bylaws, along with bank account details. No active solicitation. No manipulation. Just information. They fought this for years through multiple courts. What makes it worse: Only registered organizations can even apply for a fundraising permit from the National Police Board. Individual Mastodon admins? Not eligible. You'd need to first register a nonprofit organization (constitution, board members, official registration with PRH), pay 50 €, handle annual financial statements, bookkeeping obligations, and tax filings, then apply for permission to ask for money to cover your €10/month server costs. All this bureaucracy just to mention a donation link. The law was updated in 2020 to add "small collection" notifications (max 10 000 €), but the core problem remains: you cannot simply mention donation options without navigating this bureaucracy. The law treats someone running a community server the same as the Red Cross running nationwide campaigns. This is why Finnish admins stay silent about funding and run things for free out of their own pocket. It's not that they're secretive - it's that Finland's fundraising law hasn't caught up with how the modern internet works. Effi has submitted complaints to UN human rights reviews calling this a violation of freedom of association. So when you see a Finnish-run instance and wonder why there's no donation info: now you know. It's not a choice, it's compliance with a law written for a different era.Obviously, I hate this law, and putting this information out there is risky for me. So let me be crystal clear: please don't donate us money. I don't encourage it at all as I am not allowed by law to do so, and I'm a law-abiding citizen, after all.#MastoAdmin #Finland #Donations

Let's be real, tech is tech and money is money. I'm privileged, a middle-class-ish nerd who can - for now - cover the costs. It's annoying, but not life or death for me.But here's what keeps me up at night about this law: Someone diagnosed with cancer who needs expensive medication not covered by Kela (Finland's social insurance)? They can't legally ask for help publicly. A family whose house burned down and insurance won't cover everything? Can't post a fundraising appeal. A student who can't afford life-saving treatment? Legally prohibited from asking strangers for help, even if those strangers want to give. The same law that stops me from asking donations also prevents desperate people in genuine crisis from reaching out to the public for help. They can only ask friends and family privately, assuming they have enough friends and family with means to help.In most countries, GoFundMe and similar platforms exist precisely for these situations. In Finland, using them for personal emergencies is legally questionable at best, and outright illegal at worst. So yeah, my Mastodon server situation is a trivial inconvenience. But this law doesn't just affect nerds running hobby servers. It affects people in genuine crisis who could be saved by crowdfunding - but can't legally ask. That's what makes this law not just outdated, but genuinely cruel.

In 2022, before starting my own instance, I was worried it would feel like a burden, one more thing to be responsible for. But I've come to realize it's been one of the most enjoyable projects of my life. Sure, there's more pressure now that there are hundreds of daily users, but I get to do things my way, experiment with alphas, and learn so much about Ruby, JavaScript, React, job queues, sysops, and more. And then there's the social side of it all.I've been focusing on Mastodon Bird UI, but lately I've also started digging into the Mastodon core. There have been a few things I've wanted to change. I'm constantly improving my skills and picking up new things. I also try to take it easy and not stress too much.Of course, I don't always have time for everything. I get tired and sometimes lose focus, I'm human. But I never stay down for long.I want to thank our users for being so patient with me. There will be bugs. There will be changes. But I'm all in and doing my best. Thanks for being here.#MementomoriSocial #MastoAdmin #Mastodon

It’s funny how in 2022 they claimed that Mastodon as a whole was CSAM social media because of a few nazi servers managed by two scumbags. Now they don't seem to see the irony in X and Grok, a massive platform with half a billion users.#X #Twitter #SocialMedia

I've been wondering about Bluesky's decentralization again. I can't think of any reason why I'd want to self-host Bluesky in its current form. I cannot 100% self host "my own Bluesky".Their main selling points for building their own protocol were easier migration and better discoverability, but right now there's no simple way to migrate my Bluesky account to my own instance. And hosting the centralized parts yourself isn't really possible, or if it were, not affordable, they haven't made that feasible, by design, it seems.Even if you self-host a PDS, Bluesky's Relay only indexes up to 10 accounts from it. You can run more, but they won't federate, the central infrastructure decides what gets seen. They control this (source: https://docs.bsky.app/blog/self-host-federation#:~:text=For%20a%20smooth%20transition%20into,for%20everyone%20in%20the%20ecosystem.). You can self-host a PDS (Personal Data Server), but you still depend on Bluesky's centralized Relay and AppView. There's no production-ready alternative infrastructure from what I gather. It feels like I'd be renting a room in a hotel that someone else is running anyway, when I want my own hotel. If Mastodon gGmbH vanishes tomorrow, my instance keeps running and federating with everyone else. If Bluesky PBC vanishes, the ecosystem would need to scramble to stand up replacement infrastructure that doesn't really exist yet.ATProto keeps getting evaluated on its promises while other systems get evaluated on their merits. The "portability" selling point depends on infrastructure that isn't mature enough to actually catch you if Bluesky falls.I trust W3C, the builders and fathers of the World Wide Web, ActivityPub and the Fediverse.#Decentralization #SelfHosting #SelfHosted #Mastodon #Fediverse #Bluesky #Servers

My PR got rejected because apparently everyone else should update their clients instead of the app 😅 It wasn't an amazing fix, but it worked. Well, that's the beauty of open source, I can just keep working on my fork. Couldn't resist posting an XKCD comic in my response though.https://github.com/thelounge/thelounge/pull/5019#issuecomment-3771689763#OpenSource

It seems there are fully hosted and self-hosted options for ATProto/Bluesky now, I stand corrected on that front.Out of curiosity I looked into what it would take to build my own social media service on top of ATProto. The technical architecture is interesting, but... what would I actually gain?I chose Mastodon back in 2022 when Bluesky was still invite-only and had no self-hosting story. ActivityPub is a W3C standard. Mastodon gGmbH is a non-profit. The Fediverse has years of proven independent operation across thousands of instances.Bluesky PBC is a US for-profit company that controls protocol development, although they have made statements about wanting independent governance. Yet the network remains heavily centralized with most users on bsky.social.Running my own Mastodon instance already gives me sovereignty. ATProto doesn't offer more of that, arguably less given the current state of things. Not saying people shouldn't build on it. But for someone already running independent Fediverse infrastructure, it's hard to see what value it would add. I didn't see the appeal back then and I don't see it now.#Bluesky #ATProto #Decentralization #SelfHosting #SelfHosted

TikTok getting MAGA spawns new social media services.UpScrolled is apparently built from scratch as a centralized platform, not based on ActivityPub or ATProto. They explicitly state that current decentralized protocols don't deliver what they need for a video-forward app, whatever that means. It's run by Palestinian-Australian developer Issam Hijazi with support from the Tech for Palestine incubator, launched in June 2025. Positioned as an Instagram and TikTok alternative without shadowbanning, with chronological feeds.UpScrolled saw a massive surge after TikTok's US ownership restructure in January 2026, when Oracle and other US investors took controlling stake while ByteDance retained only 19.9%. Some users accused TikTok of censoring posts critical of ICE under the new ownership, which drove people to alternatives.Monnett is also built from scratch, centralized, with no federation. Run by Monnet Social SA based in Luxembourg, founded in 2024 by a team of European technologists and activists. It's their answer to surveillance capitalism, GDPR-compliant, hosted in Germany, with user-controlled algorithm sliders and no psychological profiling. Basically the European sovereignty play.W is the newest one, announced at Davos just days ago. Another centralized platform built from scratch, run by Anna Zeiter, former eBay chief privacy officer. It's legally a subsidiary of We Don't Have Time, a Swedish climate activist organization backed by IKEA, Volvo, Unilever, WWF, and Salesforce. The advisory board includes former German Vice Chancellor Philipp Rösler and Club of Rome chair Sandrine Dixson-Declève. Requires identity verification with photo and ID to combat bots. European-hosted data only. The name of W supposedly stands for "We" with two hidden V's for "Values" and "Verified" - and they cheerfully admit that W coming before X in the alphabet is "a welcome coincidence". Beta in February, public launch late 2026. Zeiter said the platform would already count as a success if "political Brussels" posts on W instead of X.So all three are new walled gardens with different policies and ownership, but none contribute to the Fediverse, ActivityPub or ATProto.Makes me want to shout, "Hey, look here, we're here!". But nobody listens.Sources:https://europeanconservative.com/articles/news-corner/new-european-x-alternative-backed-by-climate-activistshttps://www.wionews.com/technology/europeans-plan-to-launch-w-their-own-social-media-platform-to-rival-elon-musk-s-x-1769165110324https://monnett.social/faq/https://80.lv/articles/european-politicians-unveil-w-an-upcoming-twitter-x-alternativehttps://updates.techforpalestine.org/upscrolled-is-live-the-instagram-alternative-thats-actually-on-your-side/#SocialMedia #W #UpScrolled #Monnett #Centralized #TikTok
