there’s a lot of great options for using older browsers (like frogfind) but retro email clients (a HUGE application of computers) are pretty much isolated unless you want to wrestle with gmail SSLso I like how it’s a way to get actual use out of them

@nkizz Funny enough, I had this idea in my head just the other night that it could be something Microsoft could do for Outlook/Hotmail/Live accounts that say they want to connect to a federated service like Mastodon and thus have their email address be used as a federated service address. That idea branched off thinking about how Microsoft would probably need to have an account on a federated service and thus their own server for at least Windows Update announcements.

@PastaThief hmmmm, smtp should default to port 25. I didn’t try thunderbird, I would try disabling all authentication and SSL, it may be trying to login with a protocol it doesn’t supportthe to address when posting is ignored, you can put whatever

@jupiter_rowland it uses the mastodon REST api so it only interacts with your instance. any federation or image interchange is up to the operator of your instance, it’s like using a web browser, I don’t actually implement any activitypub code myself

@nkizz @ChartreuseK biggest annoyances with the NNTP protocol is that it has improper framing from what I recall. It lacks something like Content-Length from HTML so you have to do these encoding penances like with email to carry binaries like post images.I do miss it though and wish there was a minorly updated NNTP that could just patch a few of the major pain points without trying to reinvent everything.

@nkizz @foone OMG ! As an avid user of rss to imap solutions, I've already built a Mastodon to RSS bridge, but this bidirectionnal mail bridge is such a wonderful idea ! (and I'm quite sure it may also please @rcarmo). My only (minor) suggestion would be to replace POP with IMAP because it offers better synchronization with multiple mail clients (like my desktop and android ones)
