Initially, after the recent spam flood originating from mastodon.social, the mods of that instance enabled registration reasons. They have since disabled this step, and registration is fully open again. As such, there are no visible preventative measures in place to prevent a spam flood again. The spam has alerted us to the danger of the combination of a large "central" server, and no restrictions to signups. As such, in the absence of better moderation tools built into Mastodon, we have decided to maintain our limit on mastodon.social indefinitely. Until preventative measures are in place, or we have a better way of handling another server's spam problem, we want to take steps to protect our community.A Server Limit means that users on mastodon.social cannot contact you without you following that user first. You will still be able to contact users there who you already follow, and vice-versa.

Concretely, for us to undo the Server Limit on mastodon.social, we would need one of the following;- Better moderation tools. Specifically, ones that would allow us to filter DMs and mentions with specific keywords, server-wide.- Mastodon.social to enact preventative measures - or display to us hidden preventative measures - that would prevent a bad actor from signing up a lot of users in a short amount of time with no moderator oversight. Registration reasons would do this.Until then, mastodon.social has become, and stays, a real spam harassment risk for our community.
