I don't like #GitHub, I much rather hope that more projects and repos host their own #Git instances or better yet use #Codeberg or #Gitlab(which reminds me i need to update my GitLab again)

@asahi95@seafoam.space is there any point in using GitLab over GitHub?

@iro_miya Mainly for me, it's not owned by #Microsoft so that'll reduce my reliance and connection with them moreSecondly, it's also open source under an MIT license, unlike GitHub which is closed source (thanks M$)I much prefer Codeberg and GitLab over the proprietary king

@asahi95@seafoam.space yeah so there's the enterprise edition, which is the one they host, which is proprietary but the source code is available. So GitLab.com is effectively proprietary, with a less powerful free software version available for self-hosting.I think that's why the migration to GitLab never happened. People switched to it in fear that Microsoft would introduce terrible changes to GitHub that would make it a bad platform... but they didn't.Arguably, not much has changed since Microsoft took over, and so there aren't many arguments in favour of GitLab. It's marginally better, at least the code is available, and there is a self-hostable edition. But the offers are similar, and both are private companies, not much reason to switch imo. Maybe one is a worse company than the other, but that's hard to quantify. Then Codeberg came along and at least they have a unique value: being a non-profit. That's the kind of difference that makes adoption worth it.

@asahi95@seafoam.space GitLab was promised as "GitHub without Microsoft", and that seemed appealing, but it's pretty much like how Bluesky is "Twitter without Elon Musk". That doesn't change the fact that they're both billionaire-owned for-profits.(although, GitLab is arguably doing much better as a DevOps platform than Bluesky as a social media)

@iro_miya I must bet that Codeberg could be the better alternative to GitHub for those who really dislike Microsoft and want something ran by a non-profitIdk, due to the amount of hate M$ receives from the open source community, I feel pressured to leave GitHub but I'm hesitant to do so, I try to not let my paranoia get to me again

@asahi95@seafoam.space personally, I think non-profit endeavours should be supported by a non-profit! It's pretty scary how ubiquitous GitHub is in i the free software community. Codeberg is also pretty serious about their platform, they're working on providing CI for instance which would be super cool

@iro_miya That's quite a decent comparison tbh, I kinda thought of that tooAlthough, maybe I guess ditching GitHub will still not be the best option?

@asahi95@seafoam.space hmm, whether you should switch depends on your project. GitHub is still ubiquitous, and so if you need people to be able to contribute easily, if you're starved for help, maybe you can't afford to switch. Hopefully, as Codeberg gets more popular, it will become less of a sacrifice. But some projects can afford to switch. Calckey is doing very well on Codeberg. I think it might be because there's hype around it, and its community of contributors is the kind of people who would be more likely to embrace an alternative platform. And for small personal projects that don't really need maintainers, I dont see why you couldnt switch, unless GitHub has some features you need.

@iro_miya I hope Codeberg becomes prosperous, it seems very promising and hopefully it'll gain momentum in adoption

@iro_miya I suppose I can separate GitHub and Codeberg for certain purposes, maybe it'll be much more convenient for me by thenGitHub is cool and all but Codeberg will eventually become the next big thing :blobcatthumbsup: ....hopefully!
