@wtfrank depends on what result you want. it's becoming clear that simple preprints are adequate, and those cost practically nothing to put on a server like arXiv.org...

@glynmoody I assumed there was some value in peer review which ideally ought to be paid for rather than done voluntarily. Am I right to assume less/no peer review takes place for papers that are only published on arxiv?

@wtfrank yes, but there are increasing doubts that peer review adds much; just as important is post publication review, which can be done with preprints...

@glynmoody @wtfrank My sibling (an academic librarian) proposed an alternative to most journals : "we will print out several copies of your paper and have grad students hand-carry them to the five or ten people who actually read what you publish."
