Resurfaced by #napkin today:> A flow state is the experience of being “in the zone” and fully immersed in an activity. Scientists have tried to quantify this feeling. They found that to achieve a state of flow, a task must be roughly 4 percent beyond your current ability.> James ClearIf this is true, we can't get into flow state unless we're learning SOMEthing.

@nicole that would actually make quite a bit of sense, the novelty is part of what keeps you there, in the flow, and that is lathe learning?Though the quantification of the capability is interesting, I wonder how does one get such a precise measure. I would love to know my current ability by a number (though saying this because I would be surprised if it was a simple number of any kind).

@imrehg Yeah, I've been getting a lot of stuff from Atomic Habits resurfaced recently, and it's good because I read that book several years ago. Maybe it's time for a re-read.

@nicole @imrehg I’m (re)reading Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi on the topic. Definitely recommended. Deep Work, Atomic Havits, all seem to be inspired by it.

@nicole Sports people also get into a flow state(I read somewhere), so it goes beyond creative endeavors.I have a note to read about flow, it is such an strange phenomenon. A bit like self-hypnosis maybe?

@qwxlea Yeah, I think you can get into a flow state with most things. I often get it when coding or writing.

@nicole I’ve had an experience of physical and mental flow state in a grading I had for Aikido, time slowed down and I was able to be in the moment and peacefully plan my next move.I’ve been chasing that feeling ever since to no avail. It’s addictive. Not as intense but entering that state with more cerebral activities is also a dopamine rush, I’d almost say I crave, but it can be hard to get there deliberately.
