@markmcelroy So sorry to hear that! Not a great way to start the year. Sending you a virtual hug across the wires if you want it. <3

@apolaine You know what gets you past paywalls... Readwise.

@apolaine You should pay Readwise because it's awesome. The getting past a paywall is an added bonus for me to scold you with.

@gracefrench I try to separate researching writing from generative writing. I do the research/sense-making type of writing more regularly. Then during generative writing, I'm not worrying about adding to my vault. Usually (ideally) I would do another round of reincorporating stuff from what I've written back into my vault again afterwards, too.

Thank you, Estonia, for five years of e-residency. Here's to another five. I wish all countries made it as easy to handle the financial side of work as you do.

@gracefrench Yes, mostly nonfiction these days. But I actually started out writing fiction... I would like to get back into it at some point.

@EpiphanicSynchronicity In general, I’ve found having my own company useful in terms of deciding how much of a salary to take, or what counts as expenses, or what gets reinvested into the company and how. With the Estonian e-residency in particular, I've used it to decouple my company (which is just me) from where I live as an individual. I've moved around a lot, and that's not likely to change, and it's nice to have a flag planted somewhere that doesn't get affected whenever I move.

🔴 I'm live now with @javaducky and Nikola Grcevski on @grafana Office Hours to talk about application auto-instrumentation with eBPF and Grafana Beyla. Using this as my own opportunity to ask all the questions I have about what eBPF is and how close we can actually get to automagically observing everything using it... https://youtube.com/live/ZEUzucqXUnQ #til #ebpf #observability

2023 was a tough one for me, and there was an undercurrent of frantic and frenetic productivity to it that made everything worse. This year I want to slow down considerably. Part of that is about experimenting with NOT setting ambitious objectives for myself. Here's my thought process on that, and what I've decided to do instead: https://youtu.be/p6KdfE97y4w

@gracefrench Whatever works! I'm deliberately trying to keep my theme vague - obviously creation will be part of that, because I like making stuff, but I'm leaving it a bit more open-ended as to what I actually end up creating. I love making videos, but I also like writing code and fiction/nonfiction. So we'll see!

This is why I like interviewing people who are smarter than me. Today while I was talking to @vivaboredom and @javaducky on Grafana Office Hours about eBPF and Beyla, Nikola corrected my current understanding of how eBPF works and broadened my categorisation of instrumentation methods to three types: source, binary, and external.Relevant bit of the video: https://www.youtube.com/live/ZEUzucqXUnQ?si=N4HJRyayGdFd1nr_&t=443Updated my notes accordingly: https://notes.nicolevanderhoeven.com/Instrumentation#til

@ellane Not that I've actually started a newsletter yet, but I decided to move to Buttondown after talking it over with @apolaine . So far, it seems to have been fairly painless. Some minor interface annoyances, but the support has been pretty responsive.

@iwannabemewhenigrowup @ellane @apolaine Yes, I don't see why not. It's for sending out emails, whether they're newsletters or courses. Also, integration with Obsidian!

Finally set up my own URL shortener-- @apolaine told me ages ago about YOURLS (https://yourls.org) and I finally got around to setting it up. Now I can do things like https://nicole.to/video and https://nicole.to/notes so that it's easier to remember, shorter, and decoupled from the destination links. Thanks, Andy!My notes on how to set it up: https://notes.nicolevanderhoeven.com/YOURLS#til
