Finding anything useful on the web via google has become such a disaster. Just a sea of SEO-driven garbage. I was looking for some Python help yesterday and just could not get through the wall of robot-written SEO chum. It’s such a shame—I know that so many people are writing things that are genuinely useful and completely unfindable.

@miriamkp I'd be curious if you've tried any GPT services with the same query?

@Jbat @miriamkp Ethan #Mollick on oneusefulthing is positive about #GPT4 #Code #Interpreter for #Python. But it's often the case that experts can ask questions that are not answered in the training data.I found that #Bing solved an easy #Excel lookup question but anything more complicated could not be done.

It feels like we might need a modified version of the old Yahoo directory model of whitelisted sites or something generated and vetted by humans bc yeah, it’s just bad out there now

@miriamkp @krisnelson You mean like https://ooh.directory/?Did you try other search engines or Bing Chat? How did they compare? I wonder if Bing Chat or ChatGPT with the web search add-in could be prompted into only providing answers only from a particular directory or an uploaded csv or db, or in the case of Bing, from a list of URLs on a current page? Any thoughts on this @simon ?

@charlesroper being able to pick a subset of sites was a key idea in Blekko, I wish that had stuck aroundI know some people build that kind of thing from scratch using Google CSEBing/Bard/ChatGPT Browse don't have this kind of feature (yet)
