Thinking of #abortion and #privacy and how, at a very fundamental level, the enforcement and invasions by some state govs (and the data access by private corps to help them do it) shows that “privacy” is not quite “I have nothing (embarrassing?) to hide” but rather is at the core about #autonomy and #liberty, particularly in the face of injustice and oppression. #law #CivilRights #HumanRights

@DeliaChristina Yes! Fundamental human rights just can’t depend on the popular vote alone in a certain geographic area to determine whether they exist or not. I mean, isn’t that kind of the whole point behind constitutions and similar documents that take more than majority votes to change?

@lauren Yeah, that’s one reason I only use a PIN on my cell phone (which mixes in work stuff). Most courts have found a 5th Amendment right to not be compelled to speak to reveal a password/PIN (tho can be compelled to give name and a few other small ID details) *even with a warrant*, but there is no right against putting your finger on a device or your face in front of it (similar to no right to be fingerprinted or have a mug shot taken). Doesn’t make tech/privacy sense but does fit precedent

@lauren But note that this is complex and changable, e.g., subpoenas are a different matter, search incident to arrest is a common 4th Amendment exception that often allows searching your phone if you don’t have a PIN there, the border (or within a certain distacne of it) is a different beast entirely, etc. So don’t follow this as legal advice!

It feels like we might need a modified version of the old Yahoo directory model of whitelisted sites or something generated and vetted by humans bc yeah, it’s just bad out there now

“American exceptionalism” also includes the US being exceptionally bad in an existential sense that requires no self-reflection by the evaluator. This is not because we are “not so bad after all,” but rather because (1) we have goodness too but more importantly (2) other places have badness that needs examining rather than being excused by burying it under US exceptionalism.

You know what? I barely even want an *account* anymore, much less a personally connected one, and I really don't want to give out my email address or my phone number to create one anymore. At most I want to give you a name and a password to save my place and then do stuff. Mostly though I just want to do stuff. So tired.

Moms for Liberty is part of a long tradition of reactionary work against civil rights: mothers “were some of the most committed players in the mid-century project of ‘massive resistance’ fought to preserve the Jim Crow order.”https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jul/06/moms-for-liberty-long-history-rightwing-activism

Who is doing trainings from the left or even centrist liberal side on how to resist Moms for Liberty and school board capture and similar local political moves?A quick search turns up numerous reactionary training programs for right-wing activists but little that that is about actual liberty, rationality, democratic values, and similar. Where do I find that?Edit: not a rhetorical question. Please share if you know!#USpol #schools #education #politics #civics

My Fediverse feed sure is awfully dark & quite news-article heavy these days—quite an accurate reflection of irl tbh—but I do miss hearing the more personal words that I remember from my past tl

@futurebird I suspect many "influencers" exist primarily in opposition to things (this is not different from much of legacy media &, say, Trump), so I'd suggest these YouTube "leftists" are sticking to negativity against corporate social media because that's what riles people up and drives attention to them (sadly)

@StillIRise1963 Has anyone measured one of the other common justifications, that police (maybe just by being visible or existing) prevent or discourage crime?

@simon This is a really excellent discussion! I'm with you right up to the very end, but I did find your closing thoughts somewhat disquieting (perhaps in a positive way): "companies need to earn our trust. How can we help them do that?" I'm just not convinced it's up to *us* to "help them ... earn our trust." Why is that my responsibility? Then again, I do think well-written gov reg could help with privacy & trust, and inasmuch the gov is *us*, then I think you might well be on to something.

@foone It may on balance be worthwhile, though for many or most alt text uses a singular description of an image is not as useful as one might think—it’s almost always really critical to describe an image based on the purpose you intend for it rather then a detailed description—otherwise the description is just too long and full of pointless detail.Still, sometimes this would be excellent, like for reusable memes and such where the essentials are what matters and reuse is common!

@Wolven and is it really true that the Black Panthers started free schools in response to the poor educational opportunities in some areas, including one in Oakland that went on to win state awards for excellence in elementary education?

Finally re-found some of my old Twitter mutuals (truly nice) on Bluesky and also the joys (not so nice) on that tl of Old Twitter-style args as people talk right past each other in furious debate to prove orthogonal points w/o realizing it, all while steeped in academic or other privilege that’s often both insightful & misses the point. My tl here is much less fighty, at least when the rw & freeze peach trolls are properly blocked. But I miss some good stuff.
