For the Americans (and others) - the #coronation is weird because it’s both a Head of State and also a new Head of the Church of England. Much of the randomness, like the oil to anoint him with, is because he is the new Head of the Church. (Not sure, but I *think* this is unique - other than the Pope who is Head of State of the Vatican, I guess).

@james Anointing with oil is found a several cultures and can at least be traced to the Egyptian Pharaohs who were anointed with oil, staves of power and authority and given regnal names.

@Ben @james Didn’t HVIII create the church to get out of a marriage? Charles seems born for that gig.

@dave @Ben @james as I understand it the ceremony is straight out of Kings.“There Zadok the priest took the horn of oil out of the tent and anointed Solomon. Then they blew the trumpet, and all the people said, ‘Long live King Solomon!’” (1 Kings 1:38-39).
