One thing I for some reason lack of is a musical self-esteem. It comes from the insecurities of my childhood. Also some of the negative feedback I've received stuck to me forever, like the music teacher's comments that he will cut my finger off if I play the drums right or a bully who said I can't sing.This is why I play piano, synth, guitar and sing on my own. I never let my voice be heard.As a #Streetgazer I have released 11 songs in total over the years. I have 84 drafts I have never releasd.This unmixed song is one of those drafts. I composed it in 2019. Nobody has heard it yet, but I decided to share it for you #Mastodon folks.Should I master it and do a proper release of it? Or toss it?#Music #MusicProduction

@terrygrundy Thanks. I'm my worst critic who says "you can't release that", or "not good enough". I've been holding on to this songs, I guess I'll release them in some point. But it might take some time.

@rolle Your music is amazing! It's very professional and emotional. But I can relate to your experiences and to self-esteem -thing. I've been told all my life I can't sing. By teachers, friends and so on. It leaves scars.

@rolle No track is ever finished. FWIW, I like this. I really like Aphex Twin's comment on releasing which was something like "it's never done, I'm just "backing up" my material to 1,000,000 CDs out in the world". This is healthy. I would say, if you like it and it's something you enjoy listening to, and nothing is overtly bothering you about it, release. I have been trying to be less 'precious' about what I create and just put it out there. It probably shows 😉 but I am resolved to release!

@valoisa Thank you so much!Indeed. I know my singing wasn't great back in the day but I also know I have sophisticated pitch and I can stay on pitch. I've been practicing. If I had the guts I'd go to singing lessons and then sing in front of everyone to prove them wrong.

@m Yeah those 84 drafts contain a lot of unfinished pieces and I'm certain not of them all worth releasing. But those that are I consider almost the same for some reason, that I should dump them and try to create more... Like I'm never happy with my creations. Thanks for the comment. I wish I had more time to focus on this.

@rolle With services like SoundCloud, you could release it, see if it gets any traction and, if you later decide "that wasn't quite what I wanted" upload a remix and/or remove the version you've become dissatisfied with?

@rolle Maybe "like" is the wrong word here. Remember, your work is shaded by your experience. If a track is born out of something sad, for example, it can be hard to like. However, one never knows which track others are going to connect with and like for their own reasons. I think it's impossible to predict which tracks will find an audience. I think both of the tracks you've posted here have drama and movement and are equally worthy of release.

@rolle My son, "Oliver Si" felt the same. He's picked up his cadence more recently by being and using external editors and producers.I of all people understand the impact a producer can have on your work, but provided you retain the rights, you can always do-over, which you might likely have done anyway.

@rolle When you say 'unmixed' you mean you haven't polished the mix? I mean it's mixed and it works as a mix.I'm only replying because I hate to see people knocked down by other people... sure, my own stuff attracts a mixed bad of comments and I have been known to piss people off with my opinions on their music but... meh... guilty as charged.It sounds pretty retro to me... tuck in those highs (they're shrill), get some more 'air' in it kit-wise and get it out there as a retro piece.

@rolle The truth is, some people will love your music, some people won't.It doesn't matter.Would you really want to live in a world where everyone liked the same thing? I guess not 😀 My suggestion is to release your music!Let people decide what they will, you can't control them.Appreciate those who say they enjoy it.Ignore anyone who feels a valid use of their time and energy is being negative about someone else, they're not worth your time and energy.QED.FWIW, I enjoyed it 😊

@rolle I can definitely relate to the lack of musical self-esteem. I compensate somewhat by hiding behind humour, self-deprecation and/or certitude.But I'm taking the opposite strategy when sharing: I don't share everything, but I post demos, half-bakes ideas, experiments and things I'm practicing on.Partly because I don't have an 'artist' strategy, partly because I have to limit my focus due to health reasons.I regard them as musical social media posts - conversational starting points.

@rolle I'm never happy with my tracks, either; but I do still churn them out. It's good therapy when people like them, and probably a useful lesson in humbleness when they don't.Thanks for sharing your insecurities – we can all learn from each other's experiences.Btw, I'll listen to the track you posted when I have the opportunity – I just wanted to share these thoughts while they're still fresh in my mind!

@rolle I finally got around to listening. I like that it's in 6/8. All of synthwave is indebted to Giorgio Moroder, but the first few bars really hit a nostalgic Moroder-vibe for me, love it.And the track has a lovely, chill, even slightly majestic, feel to it. Thanks for sharing!
