I really want Mastodon to be the next big thing, but it frankly has a culture problem that is going to kill its broader adoption. After quite a long time here, and a few days at Bluesky, the comparative experience looks like this:Bluesky: "Everyone's posting about the latest weird inside joke, and I'm excited to post my weird twist on it!"Mastodon: "Jokes offend me because I was born without a sense of humor. I demand that you wrap all levity in a content warning or I will FediBlock you."

@jawarajabbi The one right now is Sexy ALF. Before that it was pictures of bunnies, I think. If the implication is Bluesky's full of right-wing jokes at the expense of marginalized groups, that's just not the case. I haven't seen any Nazis, and it's more welcoming to racial minorities than Mastodon.

@arossp I guess a joke about bunnies would be harmless. But for me, I've tried hard to fit in here and dial back some of the habits I developed on twitter, but every once in a while (as in my response to your comment) some of the old snark slips by. Still, I've had very little (if any?) offended reactions so again ... maybe it's the Mastodon culture or....

@jawarajabbi @arossp I'm with you. Bluesky seems fun right now because the people behind it have a lot of resources available to make it seem fun (invite-only FOMO, selective onboarding, etc.). Whether that can scale without all the bad stuff coming later remains to be seen. I'm not really that worried about it. Mastodon is the first platform where I haven't felt like a complete outsider, so I plan on sticking around, but maybe I'm just weird like that... 😂

@gulovsen @arossp I'm team #mastodon from here on out. I find it perplexing that anyone would choose another commercial social media site, but to each his own. And you're right: the sort of manipulative psychology that made #twitter "fun" is clearly being deployed by #bluesky (e.g. fomo) so the folks with the most easily manipulated personalities (joiners) are following the siren call. As the ultimate iconoclast Groucho Marx once said: I would never join a club that would have me as a member.
