       Many of us came to #Mastodon and the #Fediverse because of our belief in the importance of people instead of corporate and governmental control.I've seen lots of welcome guides warn that nothing on Mastodon is encrypted. It's usually emphasized that the admins can read your messages, but also means that all of your content can be subpoenaed.I think each instance should include a #WarrantCanary to note that they have not received such an order in the past.I'll start by tagging my instance admin: @omnipotens.h/t to @yair. I noticed @tooot.im has a canary in their about, which made me think that others should as well.

       @adiz @omnipotens @Montag It used to be the case for all social media back in the day, and warrant canaries were a common practice. In this age of socmed giants they all need to be in bed with all governments in order to compete on the global stage so canaries are of no use - they respond to a lot of official queries at an ever increasing rate.See e.g. https://restofworld.org/2023/elon-musk-twitter-government-orders/

       @yair@tooot.im Well, yeah. Meta, Google, et al. essentially represent the privatization and commercialization of governmental surveillance and intelligence operations a lá STASI. I think anyone is safer and better off simply not using them, regardless of worrying about encryption or warrant canaries on the comparative "mom and pop" type networks available in the Fediverse and self-hosted FOSS spheres. @omnipotens@linuxrocks.onlinee @Montag@linuxrocks.online

       @Montag Very important notice indeed!People should understand that social media is not private chat. Things posted here are here so it can be shared with the people you know and also they can share it with others, so it makes no sense to encrypt things.Everyone should be aware that this includes DMs, which are Direct Messages and aren't Private!Don't say stuff in public and on social media that you'd rather keep private. This should be a rule all internet users are aware of.
