I’m posting this because I only recently understood that most people use words all the time while they’re thinking. I don’t, and I always thought that was normal — I just use images and what I can only describe as non-verbal ideas, that I have to translate into words to communicate. I’m interested to discover if there are any others.

@khoji I assume you know about 'aphantasia'. If not, it's a fascinating subject.

@khoji Huh, I'm having a moment here.I use words, abstract ideas and images, colours, sounds and impossible spaces.e.g. It took practice, lots of it, but I can visualise a complex 3D object and rotate it 360° on all planes perfectly clearly in my mind.e.g. I can group a lot of related ideas into one 'colour space' and leave that as a blurry entity to one side while I contemplate other semi-related things....and you're telling me this is not normal? 😳

@Brian_Mahoney Yes, but that’s not my case. On the contrary: My internal images are hyper-realistic and also include smells, sounds and tactile sensations. Just not words unless absolutely necessary. They slow everything down.

@kel That sounds similar to my experience. There’s also a kind of subliminal, non-verbal idea level that is not visual either and very hard to describe.

@khoji This is so interesting. I answered words and images. But if you had a category that had words, images, AND abstract ideas, I would have chosen that instead.

@photovotary I would have liked to make it much more fine-grained but there are a maximum of 4 options.

@khoji always words, never images. Occasionally fully rendered, abstract lexical schema or 'visualization' of conceptual 'seeing', which seems to fill in for the lack of mental imagine. Yes, I am Aphantasic.

@HornedLivestock What about dreams? Visual or not?

@khoji visual, words and images. Fully rendered film scenes, occasionally with edit function. It's really quite weird. But day-to-day thinking is lexically based and often lexically and conceptually associative.

@HornedLivestock That’s fascinating: So your mind can form images, but it dispenses with them in waking consciousness.

@khoji yes. In dreams and out of body experiences, my mind can fully manipulate images, including reorientation of aspect. When I am awake, it's a wordy black void that won't shut up.

@khoji I chose the third option because "Images only" wasn't available.

@khoji I voted “words and images” but it’s not accurate. They come alongside abstract ideas. Sometimes just words, but they don’t exist on their own, really. Rarely silence.

@khoji Not only in words and images, all senses can be involved, so it can be sounds of things, music, smell, taste, sensations like touch, body feeling, temperature etc. Ok not all senses are equally often present, so sure would say words and pictures is kinda the main thing.

@khoji It’s a spectrum. The opposite is aphantasia - the lack of a mind’s eye. I have a strong inner monologue but am unable to picture, for example, a character as described in a book. I can picture things from memory (some people can’t) but my memories are low-resolution and often degrade over time.

@khoji I have a hard time to imagine abstract ideas though. Only when I learn a new language and understand a word, but have no equivalent of it in a language I know, I feel like just knowing what the words means. I assume this is how abstract idea feels like?

@kanrei It’s kind of like that. But it’s also possible to combine and manipulate like an invisible flow chart that can then produce unexpected results.

@khoji everything, words, sounds, images, sequences of events as a movie. sometimes abstract ideas, but that is usually when I'm almost asleep and then i can't remember exactly what i was thinking

@khoji My thinking consists of:*Conversations (audio) with myself.*Listening to my internal voice(s). Some tend to be panned right in my head, others more centre left, rarely panned left unless it's something sexy.*Writing stuff down, then reading it back*Running visual and audio scenarios featuring interactions with others, which usually haven't happened yet. Analysing them, rerunning them.*Static images

@sollat Similar. With hyper-realistic internal senses (touch, smell, sounds, visuals).
