Mastodon has successfully sold 12 million people on the practical use of decentralization because they see it in action. And they love it. Bluesky’s biggest fans think decentralization is horseshit—and they’re hostile to it being implemented. This is a bad omen for Bluesky.

Bluesky is selling itself to the wrong people. For it to have a future, it needs to sell itself to the folks operating servers. Those are the people that will actually fulfil what Bluesky aims to do. Instead, it’s selling itself to “influencers” who just want pre-Elon Twitter. They don’t care about nodes or servers or decentralization or DIDs. They just want to shitpost.

“Oh, but look at the buzz and the FOMO and the influencers for Bluesky…”If 100,000 people all pile onto one Bluesky node, and no other node exists, who the hell cares?

For a decentralized social network to actually be successful it needs to build two kind of network effects:1. Social graph for accounts2. Connectivity for nodesBluesky is doing a decent job of the first kind of network effect. It’s not only failing at the second kind of network effect, it doesn’t seem to be trying.

Yeah, email has no practical benefit. And this World Wide Web thing will never take off. They’re both too decentralized. We all use AOL anyway.

@atomicpoet the majority of users do not care what happens under the hood, they just want things to work.

@atomicpoet @rlux well, decentralized networks are significantly more robust than centralized ones. People will care about that.

@atomicpoet I'm not here for that. I'm here because I like what it brings to me. The vast majority don't care what's under the hood. I'm only vaguely interested in that myself.

@randulo @atomicpoet In the end, "what's under the hood" has a big influence on what you get. But it takes a long time for what that influence is, and how it works, to become apparent, if it ever does.

@atomicpoet vibin with your friends is easier and more in your control if you're decentralized.

@publius @atomicpoet Of course how well a platform is executed matters, but the *average* user does not care about federation or even want to know about it at all. All they care about is getting the experience they want. Part of that are features like block, bookmark, etc., but how these things are done, protocols, etc. have no meaning for them. The other thing is app quality, since most will be on an app. I'm ok with the existing Mastodon apps, but they're not everyone's cup of tea.
