Can someone recommend better nomenclature for master/slave when talking about hard drives?

@dangoodin For better or worse, those are the terms that were used. Since IDE is a dead interface, I think it will only cause confusion if we try to change the terminology retroactively.

Thanks for all the suggestions! For clarification, I'm looking for more suitable nomenclature to describe the relationship of not just hard drives, but other types of devices in which one device has a unidirectional control over one or more devices.I like many of the suggestions I'm seeing, but I'm concerned that many (e.g. primary/secondary or primary/ancillary) won't be clear to readers.

@dangoodin The master/slave terms have been used in a wide variety of situations. I don't think finding a single substitute that covers them all is possible.

@mansr @dangoodin A personal rule of thumb is that if I start my post with “for better or for worse”, I have already gone off the rails and need to reconsider. We don’t need to do the worse thing.
