Dear #weather people of Mastodon,Is there a place I can find historical data on the *absolute* barometric pressure for locations (not data on the *change* in barometric pressure).

@grammargirl I think weather.gov does, but getting to the data is a pain.

@grammargirl I'm genuinely curious as well, because this information is often kept behind a paywall.I once had access to a site with complete historical data for my tiny rural Maine town, which I loved referencing. This was especially useful when showing locals how our local weather has changed over many decades due to climate change.Weather.com bought them out & locked up the data. In this case, it's not even accessible with pay. It's just gone. 😢

@chris @grammargirl Tapping into the rest of #wx crowd. but I'm not sure what you mean by absolute. Station pressure or barometric pressure (station pressure adjusted to the mean sea level). Altimeter/Barometric (MSLP) are what is often most recorded in observations due to their usefulness to aviation. My favorite place to go (example frojm1971): https://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/sites/obhistory.php?station=FSD&network=SD_ASOS&metar=0&madis=0&year=1971&month=4&day=27&sortdir=asc

@bryanruby @chris Thank you!I'm asking because I have a relative who is getting bad headaches whenever "the barometer is low." So I'm trying to find cities to possibly visit where the pressure is routinely high to see if that helps.

@grammargirl Depending on where they live (in the mountains, for example) this might be as easy as going to the beach with a lower elevation. Otherwise deserts tend to have persistent high pressure. I have sinus issues like this myself so I wish y'all luck finding something! @bryanruby

@chris @bryanruby Thanks! He already moved from a high elevation to the beach, but because of all the storms this year, the pressure has been low at the beach a lot. Looking at desert cities will be interesting. ChatGPT has given me some cities to investigate, which of course, I'll have to double check to to make sure what it says is accurate.

@grammargirl For a specific place and date, go to (I entered some sample data):If you need full datasets over regions and longer periods, you will probably have to buy them. https://kachelmannwetter.com/ch/messwerte/crdoba/luftdruck-stationshoehe/20100427-2100z.html

@grammargirl WeatherUnderground (ignore the history to the name, it's owned by IBM now) has the history for any given city / weather station:https://www.wunderground.com/history/daily/us/ca/napa/KSTSUse the search in the upper right to choose a new city.

@grammargirl You’re most welcome. I was glad to find it because I’ve wondered for a while if pressure changes might be at the root of my headaches but didn’t know where to find the data. Hope your relative can find some relief soon. I’m sure they appreciate you looking out for them.

@grammargirl Last time I was in there, either on the calendar or history tab, it went back at least a year. I’d be willing to bet you could get a full data set for a small fee.

@grammargirl @bryanruby @chris There is no place with only high pressure. However, where you find deserts around 30° N and S are regions with long term average High pressure relative to elsewhere. The mid latitudes ~40° to 60° are the most changeable.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmospheric_circulation#/media/File:Earth_Global_Circulation_-_en.svg

For anyone following along on this thread, I finally found a site that gives monthly barometric pressure averages: https://www.weatherwx.com/climate-averages/la/new+orleans.htmlAnd thanks to @edwiebe, I now know about "horse latitudes" (around 30° N and S) that tend to have high pressure.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horse_latitudes

@anlomedad The person I'm helping would probably want it limited to the United States.I did find a site that mostly had the information I was seeking though (and it's worldwide). https://www.weatherwx.com/yearly-climate/au/perth.html
