#Steam just told me it won't run on Windows 7 (or 8 and 8.1, for that matter) anymore starting in 2024.Which means in 250 days, about 500€ worth of games in my account will be worthless.I'm going to fucking kill someone.

Forget the money, that's thousands of hours put into savegames that will be worthless then.

I stand correct: I will lose over 1000€ worth of games. And, best of all: all because Valve decided to build Steam on Google Chrome, of all things. This change is required as core features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows.

Ok, so with third-party software, I can migrate most of my games to Linux.Good.Now I have 249 days to convert my Windows machine to dual-boot Linux with a downsized Windows partition (because games aside, 99% of my software was written for Windows, and much of it, A/V mostly, isn't Linuxable).Which is stress and work. And I have to pick a distro, because I don't want Ubuntu again. And it would make sense to do my long-due harddrive and mainboard/CPU upgrade in the process, but I don't have 600€ to spare, and I won't have any time soon, since the so-called welfare state will starve me into poverty on a quarter of the minimum wage starting in a few months (yay disability). All around fucked, and this is gonna stress me out for the rest of the year.Fuck #Steam. I want to break Gabe Newell's nose.

If anyone can recommend a #Linux #distro, please do so.Boosts welcomeConsider that I don't know a lot about Linux (mostly just running Ubuntu out of the box).My criteria are:most software support (meaning, I gathered there are different formats for binaries, I want the least amount of "you have to compile it yourself" and the most amount of "we offer compiled binaries for the popular distros")least under-the-hood tweaks required to run it (I have 10+ years experience administrating my own Windows machines, 0 years experience with Linux)best driver support (last I heard, which was 5-ish years ago, Linux was a driver nightmare for GPUs etc)least amount of corporate fuckshittery (like, say, Canonical forcing snaps on everyone)I'm gonna wanna do gaming on thatBasically, I want my transition (haha) from Windows to be as easy as possible and not bother with stuff such as"for this distro, we don't offer binaries""if you want the wifi to work, just do (arcane rituals on buried files)""haha the distro devs don't let you do that for corporate reasons""sorry your GPU is limited to 10% of its potential"(I have no qualms installing proprietary software tho, so if the distro can't ship good drivers for FOSS reasons but working proprietary ones are available, I'll take 'em, no license purity with me)My current machine specs (can't afford to upgrade anything for the next few years) are:Intel Core i5-4570AMD Radeon RX 58016 GB DDR3 memoryBoosts welcome

@amberage dont want to sound mean, but win7 was out of support for a long time already. Stuff stopping to eventually run on it is quite to expect. A switch to either Linux or newer windows would have been easier sooner rather than later. Now its very late and you got way more data to transfer over to linux like you plan.

Follow-up question: are there any desktop environments with a task bar and start menu similar to Windows, rather than the OS X-like dock they all seem to have?#Linux

@amberageAs example.. imagine you'r on your Desktop and want to change something about it but dont know how.. one of the first ideas youhave will be to rightklick on an empty space on the Desktop to see there is a context menu... and your right there are all shortcuts to settings from the Desktop you need... thats Linux Mint.. simple little smart things who makes your life easyer
