(sigh)Just spent evening going through posts claiming that only nerds care about federation. These are not nerdy issues, these are societal issues. I am not a developer, I joined the Fediverse because I was worried about the behaviour of Facebook, Twitter etc.I get that centralised networks are easier to sign up on, but they are harder to leave. You're giving them control over your online social life. It's like that XKCD cartoon about infrastructures, it's sometimes difficult to get across to people that it's not about technical standards per se, but the shift in power that tech standards represent. That's why centralised tech companies put so much effort into controlling tech standards, not because they're nerds but because they are power-hungry and greedy.

(I know Eugen has his critics, but I haven't been one of them. I don't like the abuse he's received, and none of the following is meant as a personal criticism.)This is getting really dangerous. Eugen now controls the following:-The largest instance by far, which may end up a majority instance as it is now promoted as the default choice-The official Mastodon apps-The official Mastodon site-The official onboarding system-The Mastodon API-The Mastodon name and trademark in relation to social networks (he can sue an instance that has the word "mastodon" in its domain name if it doesn't use official Mastodon software, which he also controls)He's now using the official onboarding system on the official app to promote the largest instance (which he also owns) as the official instance... how is this not centralisation?

@FediThingWe just need more people like Eugen and similar projects to Mastodon. I feel like they exist but without as much polish. Sadly, that matters.
